The documentary sheds light on the multi-talented star, Shari Lewis, best known for her ventriloquism work with Lamb Chop. Mallory Lewis expressed her excitement at seeing her mother’s story come to life on screen after being inspired by the Ruth Bader Ginsburg documentary, “RBG.” She met with a producer who helped kickstart the project, and finding the right director was crucial. In a serendipitous meeting in New York City, Mallory connected with Lisa D’Apolito, and they bonded instantly over a personal anecdote that solidified Mallory’s trust in sharing her mother’s story with Lisa.
Lisa D’Apolito, known for directing the acclaimed documentary “Love, Gilda,” was drawn to Shari’s story as someone from a generation bridging Shari’s two iconic shows. Delving into Shari’s background and talents, Lisa discovered the magical upbringing Shari had with her father, the official magician of New York City. Recognising Shari as a multi-faceted artist, Lisa was determined to showcase the depth of Shari’s career beyond her popular shows.

Accessing Shari Lewis’ archives posed a challenge for the filmmakers, with the valuable collection stored in David Copperfield’s museum or warehouse. Mallory and Lisa had to sift through decades of material, uncovering hidden gems about Shari’s life that surprised even Mallory. The collaboration between Mallory and Lisa ensured that Shari’s story was told authentically and without sentimentality, portraying the legendary puppeteer in a truthful light.
Despite the documentary being a labour of love, the filmmakers faced obstacles such as the COVID-19 pandemic delaying the release. Mallory credits Lisa for beautifully capturing her mother’s journey of self-discovery and empowerment during trying times. Lisa acknowledges Mallory’s invaluable input as a producer, providing essential insights into her mother’s life and career that enhanced the authenticity of the storytelling.

“Shari & Lamb Chop” is set to premiere in select theatres on July 18, offering audiences a glimpse into the remarkable life of Shari Lewis beyond her popular puppetry. Mallory and Lisa’s collaboration promises an insightful and honest portrayal of a trailblazing artist who redefined the world of ventriloquism and children’s entertainment.
