Kevin Kwan, widely known for his bestselling novel turned blockbuster movie “Crazy Rich Asians,” is leading the charge for increased representation of Eurasian stories in the media. While the film adaptation of his book has contributed to greater Asian representation in Hollywood, Kwan believes there is still much more to be done to showcase diverse and relatable narratives for Asians and immigrants.

In a recent episode of NPR’s Book of the Day podcast, Kwan discussed the impact of “Crazy Rich Asians” on Hollywood representation and shed light on his latest work, “Lies and Weddings,” released in June 2024. Despite his previous focus on the rich and powerful, Kwan expressed a desire to explore stories beyond the ultra-privileged world he had portrayed in his earlier works.
The author highlighted the significance of his portrayal of privilege, power, and wealth from an Asian perspective, touching on the complexities that arise when different cultures intersect through migration and intermarriage. Kwan emphasised the lack of representation for biracial Eurasians, such as Constance Wu’s character in “Crazy Rich Asians,” and the importance of showcasing the nuanced experiences of individuals straddling two separate cultures.
Kwan’s success with “Crazy Rich Asians” has drawn attention to the broader issue of diversity in Hollywood, where characters of colour are often portrayed as aspirational figures with wealth. He stressed the need for the industry to explore a wider range of immigrant and people of colour narratives that resonate with audiences on a deeper level.
Recognising the draw of stories centred around wealth, Kwan shared details about his upcoming novel, “Lies and Weddings,” which forms part of a trilogy featuring different major cities. The first book, “Sex and Vanity,” was set in New York, while “Lies and Weddings” takes place in London, with the third instalment planned to unfold in Paris.
Looking ahead, Kwan expressed a desire to shift his focus towards stories that encompass the other 99% of society beyond the elite circles he has previously explored. By delving into a wider array of territories and experiences, he aims to capture a more diverse range of narratives that authentically reflect the complexities of the human experience.
As Kwan continues to push for greater representation and diversity in storytelling, his body of work serves as a testament to the power of narratives that resonate with readers from all backgrounds. Through his dedication to exploring a more inclusive range of voices and perspectives, Kwan is paving the way for a more vibrant and representative media landscape that celebrates the richness of Eurasian stories and beyond.
