A father lost his life while heroically trying to save his two daughters from drowning off the coast of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The incident occurred on Sunday, June 15, when 33-year-old Antwon Wilson responded to his daughters’ distress calls while they were swimming at Fort Lauderdale Beach near the B Ocean Resort. The Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue (FLFR) received multiple 911 calls at around 7:20 p.m. reporting the drowning in the ocean, even though the Ocean Rescue team had already clocked out for the day at 7 p.m.
Despite being off duty, the FLFR lieutenants quickly responded to the emergency, diverting their trucks to the scene. According to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Daniel Moran, Wilson entered the water to rescue one of his daughters, aged between 7 and 10 years old, who was struggling. Wilson managed to reach his daughter and keep her afloat until lifeguards could assist and bring her to safety. Another adult, Eslam Saad, also entered the water to aid the children, but he too encountered difficulties and was briefly submerged before managing to rescue one of the girls.

The actions of both Wilson and Saad resulted in both children being successfully rescued, but tragically, Wilson did not resurface after going underwater. Despite efforts to save him, Wilson was pronounced dead upon arrival at Broward Health Medical Center. Saad recounted the events, expressing his immediate instinct to jump in and help without a second thought. He conveyed his determination to assist the distressed child and bring her back to shore, through immense effort and risk to his own safety.
Wilson’s daughter and Saad are currently convalescing at Broward Health Medical Center, with reports indicating that they are conscious and responsive. The Fort Lauderdale Police Department (FLPD) has commenced an investigation into Wilson’s untimely demise, with preliminary findings suggesting that it was the result of an accidental drowning. Witness accounts and further details concerning the sequence of events leading to Wilson’s heroic act and subsequent tragedy are being scrutinised by authorities.
