At just 25 years old, Cameron Mofid has achieved a remarkable feat – he has visited every single one of the 195 countries in the world. But his journey was not just about ticking off destinations from a bucket list; it was a deeply personal and transformative experience born out of his struggle with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Mofid, originally from California, was diagnosed with OCD at a young age. The disorder, characterized by uncontrollable and recurring thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviours (compulsions), often left him feeling overwhelmed by uncertainty and unpredictability. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Mofid shared how his decision to travel the world was a deliberate attempt to challenge his OCD symptoms head-on.

“The disorder thrives on control, on routines and structure,” Mofid explained. “Travel, by contrast, is inherently chaotic and uncertain. That’s exactly why I chose it.” By immersing himself in unfamiliar and unpredictable environments, Mofid found a way to confront his fears and break free from the constraints imposed by OCD.
Mofid’s travels took him to some unexpected destinations, such as Iraq and Venezuela, countries that have faced political turmoil and social challenges. Despite initial expectations of caution or hostility, he was met with warmth and generosity from the local people. He noted that these encounters were not just about sightseeing but about experiencing resilience, beauty, and rich histories often overshadowed by negative headlines.
One of the most impactful moments of Mofid’s journey was his visit to Makoko, a floating slum in Nigeria known for its harsh living conditions. Prior to his travels, his OCD might have deterred him from exploring such places. However, witnessing the community’s struggles inspired him to establish the nonprofit organization Humanity Effect, which provides support to children in need through schools and an orphanage.
Travelling on a budget, Mofid faced numerous challenges that pushed him out of his comfort zone. From staying with tribes that practiced unique customs to enduring long bus rides through remote African regions, each experience contributed to his personal growth and resilience. Despite having visited all 195 countries, Mofid’s thirst for exploration remains unquenched, with plans to revisit certain regions in the Middle East, Spain, and Latin America.
As Mofid reflects on his journey, he acknowledges that the process of travel itself has been instrumental in managing his OCD. “There’s a saying: the more you travel, the more you know you don’t know. That rings true for me,” he shared. By embracing the uncertainties of travel, Mofid has not only conquered his OCD but also discovered a newfound sense of freedom and possibility in the vast tapestry of the world.
In a world where mental health struggles are often stigmatized, Mofid’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the healing potential of exploration and self-discovery. His journey from a place of limitation to liberation is a testament to the human spirit’s capacity for resilience and growth. Cameron Mofid’s odyssey around the globe is not just a physical voyage but a testament to the transformative power of courage and determination in overcoming personal challenges.
