New Study Reveals Weight-Loss Medications Are Less Effective in Real-World Settings

A recent study has shed light on the effectiveness of weight-loss medications, highlighting challenges faced by individuals in the real world compared to clinical trials. The study, published in the Obesity Journal on June 10th, delved into the outcomes of nearly 8,000 patients with severe obesity who were treated with GLP-1 medications like semaglutide and tirzepatide between 2021 and 2023.
GLP-1 medications, known for their impact on satiety, include popular brands such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound. Researchers tracked the progress of these patients until December 2024 and found that discontinuation rates were significant, with over 20% stopping their medications early and 32% discontinuing later on. Moreover, more than 80% of patients were on lower maintenance doses, indicating potential challenges with adherence.

The study revealed that individuals who discontinued their treatment early experienced an average weight loss of 3.6%, whereas those who stopped later saw a slightly higher loss of 6.8%. On the other hand, patients who remained on the medication for the full duration achieved a weight loss of around 12%.
