Nicole Daedone’s Orgasmic Meditation Workshops Promised Spiritual Growth—Employees Called it a Cult

Nicole Daedone, the founder of OneTaste, a company focused on teaching the practice of orgasmic meditation, recently made headlines for less than flattering reasons. While she touted her workshops as a means for spiritual growth and empowerment, some former employees have come forward with allegations that paint a darker picture, likening the company to a cult. Daedone, along with former head of sales Rachel Cherwitz, was convicted on a federal charge of forced labor conspiracy just days before sharing her vision for the company with a reporter.

In an interview at the Harlem offices of the Institute of OM, previously known as OneTaste, Daedone discussed the practice of orgasmic meditation (OM), a 15-minute sensual practice aimed at unlocking a woman’s spiritual and physical potential. She claimed that OM could heal past sexual trauma and empower women, garnering a following of devoted disciples who saw her as a spiritual leader. Despite Daedone’s intentions to create a collaborative community, former employees have raised accusations of exploitation and control reminiscent of a cult.

The legal troubles for Daedone and Cherwitz began in April 2023 when they were indicted on a charge of forced labor conspiracy. Prosecutors alleged that the defendants exerted complete control over employees, driving them into debt, directing them to perform sexual acts, and withholding wages. These allegations painted a stark contrast to Daedone’s public image as a feminist entrepreneur aiming to empower women through pleasure and self-awareness.

As the legal battle unfolded in court, former employees testified about their experiences within the company. Testimonies revealed instances of financial exploitation, verbal and sexual abuse, and a pervasive culture of surveillance and control. Despite the defence’s argument that employees had the agency to leave their roles, the prosecution successfully argued that Daedone and Cherwitz had preyed on vulnerable individuals under the guise of empowerment.

Following a five-week trial, a jury found Daedone and Cherwitz guilty of forced labor conspiracy, facing up to 20 years in prison. While the defendants plan to appeal the verdict, the prosecution hailed the outcome as a victory against individuals who manipulated others for personal gain. The case shed light on the darker aspects of Daedone’s business practices, raising questions about the fine line between empowerment and exploitation in the wellness industry.
