Woman and Toddler Perish, Three Rescued as SUV Plunges into Ohio Pond

Tragedy struck in West Jefferson, Ohio, as a woman aged 27 and a toddler lost their lives when an SUV careened into a retention pond. The incident occurred on June 5, with emergency services responding swiftly to the distress call. A total of five individuals were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. The West Jefferson Police Department and the Ohio State Highway Patrol are currently investigating the cause of the accident.
The West Jefferson Police Department received reports of a vehicle submerged in the pond near U.S. Route 40 and Park West Drive. In a concerted effort to save the trapped occupants, a water rescue operation was immediately initiated. Among those inside the SUV were three adults and two children. The driver, identified as Chineda Valcin, managed to escape the submerged vehicle along with another adult, Medgine Louis, and a 5-year-old child before it sank.
Tragically, a 27-year-old woman, Kelita Alfred, and a 3-year-old child were extracted from the SUV and rushed to a hospital in Columbus. Despite medical efforts, they were pronounced dead at the hospital. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the SUV, a 2016 Jeep Cherokee, veered off the road, struck a ditch, and landed in the retention pond around 6:30 p.m. local time.
Dramatic footage released by WSYX captured the intense rescue operation, showing police officers sprinting across a field to reach the distressed individuals trapped in the submerged vehicle. The harrowing screams for help underscored the urgency of the situation, with rescuers frantically working to secure additional life-saving equipment.
Responding to the scene, multiple fire departments and A2B Towing and Recovery collaborated in aiding the rescue efforts. The survivors, two adults, emerged unscathed, while the 5-year-old child sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was promptly transported to Nationwide Children’s Hospital for further medical attention.
Expressing solidarity with the affected individuals, Brandon Smith, Chief of Police at the West Jefferson Police Department, lauded the collaborative response of law enforcement, fire and rescue teams, towing services, and medical personnel.
