Pfc Dewayne Johnson II, a former soldier stationed in Hawaii, received a 23-year prison sentence on June 3 after pleading guilty to the killing of his 19-year-old wife, Mischa Johnson. The horrific crime involved the use of a machete and chainsaw to dismember Mischa’s body, which was later disposed of in a dumpster. The soldier also admitted to voluntary manslaughter, obstruction of justice, and providing false statements during his court-martial.

The tragic incident unfolded on July 12, 2024, when Dewayne engaged in a heated argument with his wife at their residence. During the altercation, he struck Mischa in the head with a machete, resulting in a fatal blow. In a chilling testimony, Dewayne revealed to the judge that he attempted to dismember Mischa’s body with the same machete but was unsuccessful. Subsequently, he resorted to using a chainsaw to separate her limbs from the torso, before disposing of the remains in trash bags at a military barracks dumpster.

Despite his heinous actions, Dewayne expressed remorse during his sentencing hearing on June 3. The U.S. Army reiterated that the remains of Mischa and her unborn child were never recovered and are presumed to have been incinerated along with other trash at a facility in Hawaii. In a statement, Lt. Col. Nicholas Hurd, a prosecutor for the Seventh Circuit in the U.S. Army, hoped that Dewayne’s admission of guilt and the details provided as part of the plea agreement would offer some closure to the victim’s family and friends.
