Man’s Body Discovered in Colorado River Almost a Year after Raft Mishap

The search for Thomas Russell, 62, who went missing in the Colorado River after a rafting accident on June 1, 2024, has come to a tragic end. The incident also claimed the life of Brent Boulter. The Grand County Sheriff’s Office in Colorado revealed that Russell’s remains were found near Rancho Del Rio after nearly a year had passed following the mishap.

After a raft overturned in the river on that fateful day in 2024, resulting in the death of Brent Boulter, Russell disappeared. It wasn’t until recently, with a significant drop in water levels in the area, that authorities were able to locate Russell’s body. The Eagle County Sheriff’s Office notified the Grand County’s Sheriff’s Office about the discovery on May 21. Following a forensic dental identification, Russell’s next of kin was informed by the Grand County Coroner’s Office.

This discovery brings some closure to the unfortunate event that occurred almost a year ago. Authorities were first alerted on June 1, 2024, about an individual found unresponsive in a section of the Colorado River in Gore Canyon. The victim, identified as Brent Boulter, was pronounced dead by emergency responders. Russell was reported missing after the raft capsized during the same incident.

Despite extensive search efforts by emergency responders in the river and its vicinity soon after the accident, Russell remained unaccounted for. Tragically, subsequent search attempts were also unsuccessful. It was noted that neither Boulter nor Russell were equipped with personal flotation devices (PFD) at the time of the accident, as stated in preliminary reports by the sheriff’s office.

Last year, Grand County Sheriff Brett Schroetlin stressed the importance of wearing life vests in the water, emphasizing that it not only aids in self-rescue but also facilitates locating individuals in emergency situations. The sheriff specifically highlighted the significance of wearing PFDs, particularly in areas like the Yarmony Rapids, where the accident transpired, underscoring how crucial they are for safety on the water.
