A tragic incident unfolded earlier this year when 9-year-old Silvanna Moreno passed away after undergoing anesthesia for a dental surgery. The young third-grader from Southern California lost her life on Tuesday, March 18, just hours after being treated at Dreamtime Dentistry in Vista, California. Recently, the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office shared their findings on Silvanna’s cause of death, shedding light on the heartbreaking circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to the autopsy report obtained by PEOPLE, Silvanna’s demise was attributed to methemoglobinemia, a condition triggered by an excessive intake of nitrous oxide during anesthesia. This unfortunate occurrence led to a situation where the oxygen delivery to Silvanna’s tissues was compromised, ultimately resulting in hypoxia. The report highlighted that Silvanna initially sought treatment for tooth pain back in October 2024, and was later scheduled for a procedure at Dreamtime Dentistry on March 18, 2025.
On the day prior to the surgery, Silvanna had experienced a fever, which subsided after receiving children’s Tylenol. Despite complaining of a headache on the day of the operation, she did not exhibit any signs of distress. She underwent anesthesia at 10 a.m. for a three-hour procedure before being transferred to a recovery room, followed by discharge. However, upon returning home, her condition began to deteriorate rapidly.
After arriving home from the dental clinic, Silvanna displayed signs of being disoriented and later started snoring heavily. Although she initially responded to stimuli by opening her eyes and standing, her health took a turn for the worse when her heart rate dropped significantly. Concerned for her wellbeing, her grandmother made a distress call to emergency services at 4:46 p.m., around six hours post-surgery. Despite the medical interventions at Rady Children’s Hospital Emergency Department, Silvanna could not be revived, and was pronounced dead at 5:44 p.m.
