Beloved actor George Wendt, best known for his iconic role as Norm Peterson on the hit sitcom Cheers, has sadly passed away at the age of 76. The talented actor breathed his last on the morning of Tuesday, May 20. Confirming the news of his demise, Wendt’s publicist Melissa Nathan shared in a statement to PEOPLE, “Beloved actor and comedian, George Wendt, best known for starring in the NBC hit comedy Cheers, has passed away.”

Describing Wendt as a cherished family man and a beloved friend to many, the statement continued, “George’s family confirmed the news of his death early Tuesday morning, announcing he died peacefully in his sleep while at home. George will be remembered fondly by all who were lucky enough to have known him. He will be missed forever. The family has requested privacy during this time.”

Wendt, born in Chicago in 1948, was one of nine siblings, with his sister Kathryn being the mother of well-known actor and comedian Jason Sudeikis. Despite facing challenges early on, including flunking out of Notre Dame, Wendt found his calling in comedy at Chicago’s The Second City theatre in 1974. He was married to Bernadette Birkett in 1978, with whom he shared three children – Hilary, Joe, and Daniel.

Before achieving fame as a comedian, Wendt had his fair share of struggles, including being fired and quitting at The Second City.
