A man with a prosthetic eye, Amit Ghose, recently shared his experience of being refused service at a local cafe due to his facial disfigurement. Ghose, who was born with Neurofibromatosis type 1, a genetic condition that can cause facial changes and tumors on nerve tissue, recounted the incident to BBC News. The 35-year-old was left shocked when a female employee at the cafe told him they were no longer serving and walked away, despite other customers still being served. Ghose described the uncomfortable situation, noting that everyone in the cafe was staring at him as if they had seen a ghost.

This unfortunate incident at the coffee shop was not the only instance of discrimination that Ghose faced. During a visit to a local park, he encountered individuals who made hurtful comments about his appearance, leading him to feel upset. However, instead of letting these negative experiences bring him down, Ghose was inspired to take a positive step. He decided to channel his emotions into creating a children’s book titled “Born Different” as a way to educate and spread awareness about diversity and acceptance.

In addition to his book, Ghose also turned to social media for support and empowerment. Starting a TikTok account in 2023, he has since gained a significant following of nearly 200,000 people. By sharing his personal story and journey, Ghose hopes to inspire others to embrace their uniqueness and overcome challenges. He emphasised that his online presence has not only helped others but also aided him in developing self-acceptance and confidence.
Reflecting on his coping mechanism during tough times, Ghose highlighted his passion for cricket as a source of strength and identity. The sport played a crucial role in shaping his self-perception, transitioning from being defined by his physical appearance to being recognised for his love for cricket. Ghose’s resilience and determination to advocate for inclusivity and self-love serve as a powerful message to individuals facing similar struggles.
Instances of discrimination and prejudice based on appearance are unfortunately not uncommon, highlighting the ongoing need for awareness and understanding. Ghose’s experience sheds light on the importance of promoting inclusivity and celebrating diversity in all aspects of society. His decision to speak out and share his story serves as a reminder of the impact of individual actions and the significance of creating a more accepting and compassionate community for everyone.
As Ghose continues to navigate challenges and strive for positive change, his story resonates as a beacon of hope and inspiration for those facing similar adversities. By raising awareness and fostering empathy, he advocates for a more inclusive and compassionate world where differences are embraced and celebrated. Amit Ghose’s courage and resilience exemplify the power of self-acceptance and the importance of standing up against discrimination, inspiring others to do the same.
