Two additional victims of the devastating Palisades Fire have been formally identified by authorities. The County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s Office has released the names of the latest victims as 32-year-old Rory Sykes and 79-year-old Elizabeth Morgan.

Rory Sykes tragically lost his life on Sunday, January 12, when he was discovered deceased at his residence on Rambla Pacifico Street in Malibu. The cause of his death was determined as “inhalation of products of combustion and thermal injuries.” Elizabeth Morgan was pronounced dead on Monday, January 20, after she was found at her residence on Aloha Drive in Pacific Palisades. The precise cause of her death has not been disclosed.
In the wake of the Pacific Palisades fire, the total number of fatalities has now reached 29. Rory Sykes and Elizabeth Morgan represent the 19th and 20th victims to be identified. Of the reported deaths, 12 have been linked to the Palisades Fire, which engulfed 23,448 acres of land before being brought under control by Cal Fire.
As the community continues to mourn the loss of lives and properties, the focus has now turned to the aftermath of the fire. Authorities are concerned about the potential risks of flooding and mudslides in the areas impacted by the recent blazes. Efforts are underway to mitigate these risks and ensure the safety of residents.
Following weeks of road closures, Pacific Coast Highway was set to fully reopen this week. However, the road closure is being reinstated temporarily in anticipation of inclement weather conditions. With incoming storms expected to bring heavy rainfall, residents are advised to exercise caution and stay prepared for potential emergencies.
Despite the challenges posed by the natural disasters, the spirit of resilience and community support shines through. Individuals and organisations are coming together to assist those affected by the fires and provide relief during this difficult time.
As the region grapples with the aftermath of the fires, the stories of bravery and loss serve as poignant reminders of the fragility of life. The courage displayed by individuals such as Rory Sykes and Elizabeth Morgan, along with countless others impacted by the fires, will not be forgotten.
The road to recovery may be long, but with the strength and unity of the community, there is hope for rebuilding and healing in the days ahead. The memories of those lost in the Palisades Fire will forever be cherished, as the community honours their legacies and looks towards a future of resilience and restoration.
