On January 29th, a devastating collision between an American Airlines plane and a U.S. Army helicopter claimed the lives of 67 individuals, with 28 of them being members of the figure skating community.

The depth of sorrow and loss was keenly felt within the skating world, prompting a widespread response to honour the memory of those lost. This heartfelt gesture aimed to offer solace and support to the grieving families and friends of the departed. The coordination of this nationwide commemoration displayed a touching unity and empathy among the skating fraternity.

Among the victims were young skaters who were part of various clubs, as highlighted in a tribute video shared by U.S. Figure Skating. The loss of these vibrant individuals has left a deep void within the global skating community.

These acts of kindness and compassion showcase the resilient spirit of the skating community in the face of adversity.
The outpouring of support extended beyond physical locations, with online platforms also serving as spaces for collective mourning and reflection. Efforts to ensure that the victims are not forgotten and that their legacies endure reverberate throughout the skating community, embodying the resilience and strength that define them.
In response to the overwhelming loss, U.S. Figure Skating initiated a fundraiser to aid the families directly impacted by the tragedy. This heartfelt initiative seeks to provide practical assistance and emotional support to those navigating the aftermath of this devastating event. The skating community’s unity and generosity in times of hardship underscore the bonds that transcend the sport itself.
