Renowned comedians and celebrities recently gathered to honour the iconic late Joan Rivers in a special tribute show set to air on NBC on May 13. An uncensored version of the show will be available for streaming on Peacock the following day. The event, titled ‘Dead Funny: A Living Tribute to Joan Rivers’, saw stars of the show coming together to celebrate the comedic genius of Rivers by posing with an urn containing her ashes, in a light-hearted yet poignant gesture.
Hosted at the historic Apollo Theater in Harlem during the 20th annual New York Comedy Festival last November, the comedy special promises to bring forth the irreverent and bold humour that Rivers was famously known for. Melissa Rivers, daughter of the late comedy legend, fondly recalls how her mother would have cheekily responded to the upcoming tribute, stating, “Given that I’m dead, I assume someone will finally decide to honour me. Well, it’s about time.”
The show is expected to feature stand-up performances and anecdotes from various comedians and entertainers who were inspired by Rivers’ fearless approach to comedy. From playful roasting to sharing jokes from Rivers’ meticulously maintained index cards, the event aims to capture the essence of her legacy. Notable personalities like Chelsea Handler, Nikki Glaser, Tiffany Haddish, Aubrey Plaza, Rita Wilson, alongside Melissa and her son Cooper, came together to pay their respects to the late comedy icon.
Offering insight into Rivers’ multifaceted personality, Wilson reminisced about the late comedian’s sharp wit and work ethic. “She was obviously a pioneer, and she pushed things to the edge as they say,” Wilson reflected, highlighting Rivers’ glamour amidst a predominantly male industry. Emphasising Rivers’ resilience in the face of criticism, comedian Joel McHale praised her ability to brush off negative comments, a trait he believes would have served her well in today’s digital age.
Melissa Rivers, who not only conceived the tribute show but also serves as its executive producer, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to celebrate her mother’s enduring legacy. The event also served as a fundraiser for God’s Love, We Deliver, a charitable organisation close to Rivers’ heart. Melissa remarked, “This is more than a tribute. It’s a reminder of the trail she blazed and the joy she brought to so many. She loved giving back, and now we’re giving back in her honour.”
