In a surprising turn of events, an 8-year-old boy managed to order a whopping 70,000 Dum Dums lollipops using his mother’s phone. The incident, which took place in Kentucky, left the mother, Holly LaFavers, facing a hefty bill of $4,200 on her Amazon account. The discovery was made by LaFavers on Sunday, May 4, as she noticed the significant charge on her bank account.

The young boy, named Liam, who was adopted by LaFavers at the age of 2 and 1/2, has fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). According to reports from NBC News and ABC News, Liam had apparently intended to use the lollipops as prizes for a carnival he wanted to host for his friends. Despite his good intentions, the mammoth order came as a shock to his mother, who described the moment she realised the costly mishap as panic-inducing.

Despite typically using her phone as a reward, LaFavers stated that Liam was aware that he was not permitted to place any orders. Speaking about the incident, LaFavers shared that Liam’s usual interest in browsing on Amazon had never led to any purchases before, making this incident a first-time occurrence. Following the discovery of the unauthorized purchase, LaFavers reached out to Amazon for assistance in rectifying the situation.
After seeking help from Amazon, LaFavers was advised to reject the delivery of the lollipops in order to secure a refund. However, despite her efforts, 22 boxes of Dum Dums lollipops still arrived at her doorstep. As the deliveries continued, with an additional eight boxes arriving later, LaFavers found herself overwhelmed by the situation and turned to her community for support.
Taking to Facebook for assistance, LaFavers received an outpouring of help from friends, family, and even local businesses who purchased boxes of lollipops. The kind gesture from the community, which included doctor’s offices and banks, aided LaFavers in managing the unexpected surplus of lollipops. Eventually, after a long day of reaching out for help, LaFavers received news that Amazon had issued a full refund to her.
The heartwarming response from the community, coupled with Amazon’s cooperation in resolving the issue, turned what could have been a financial disaster into a sweet and uplifting story. LaFavers expressed her gratitude towards everyone who offered support and assistance during the challenging ordeal. The incident sheds light on the importance of understanding and supporting individuals with FASD, highlighting the unique challenges they may face in everyday situations.
