The community of Vermont was struck by tragedy when the body of an 87-year-old man, Ronald Van Mynen, was found 80 miles away from his home, nearly a month after he went missing. Officials at the Shelburne Police Department in Vermont, located just 7 miles outside Burlington along Lake Champlain, had launched a search for Van Mynen after he was reported missing. The investigation began on April 3, with concerns raised due to the man’s medical issues and memory impairment.

Reports indicated that Van Mynen was last seen in Grand Isle, a city 30 miles north of Shelburne, on the evening of April 1. He had stopped at a gas station in Alburgh, a town near the Canadian border, to call his wife before heading towards South Burlington for errands, driving a silver BMW X3.

Tragically, Van Mynen did not reach his intended destination, sparking a worried search effort led by the authorities. The Shelburne Police Corporal Matthew Denis highlighted the challenges faced in the case, as the missing man did not have a phone or tracking device with him, making it difficult to trace his movements.

Despite the lack of technology to aid in the search, the police and community remained determined to locate Van Mynen. Two days after he was last seen alive, the Shelburne Police Department shared a missing persons flyer to raise awareness and gather information to assist in the search efforts.

Following a breakthrough in the investigation, the New York State Police informed their counterparts in Shelburne that they had found Van Mynen’s car in Mountain View, New York. A contractor working in the area stumbled upon the vehicle stuck on a camp road, leading to the discovery of Van Mynen’s body nearby.
