18-year-old Onyx Middleton, a freshman at Clark Atlanta University, started experiencing headaches during her first year of college. On February 9, 2024, after displaying alarming symptoms like uncontrollable crying and nonsensical speech, Onyx was rushed to Wellstar North Fulton Medical Center in Alpharetta, Ga.
Onyx’s mother, Cherise Middleton, recalls the confusion and fear she felt as her daughter’s health rapidly declined. Initial suspicions of schizophrenia were replaced by a grim reality—Onyx was experiencing seizures and required urgent medical attention. Subsequent tests and procedures revealed a shocking diagnosis: Onyx was suffering from anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis (NMDARE), an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the brain.
Dr. Varun Kannan, Onyx’s neurologist, emphasized the rarity and severity of the condition, underscoring its potential life-threatening consequences. NMDARE often presents with symptoms such as psychosis, seizures, and respiratory failure, necessitating immediate intervention. Onyx underwent intensive treatment to suppress her immune system and allow her brain to heal from the autoimmune assault.
