Home Alone 2 director, Chris Columbus, recently shared his thoughts on President Donald Trump’s cameo in the 1992 movie, calling it a ‘curse’ and ‘albatross’. In a new interview, Columbus expressed regret over Trump’s brief appearance in the film, stating that he wishes it could be erased from the movie altogether. The controversial cameo features Trump at The Plaza Hotel, which he owned at the time.

Having directed iconic films such as the first Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, and the first two Harry Potter movies, Chris Columbus is no stranger to the world of cinema. However, he admitted in a recent interview with the San Francisco Chronicle that Trump’s cameo has become a point of contention for him. Despite Trump’s claims in 2023 that Columbus encouraged him to be part of the movie, the director made it clear that he would never seek out a “non-actor” for a film role.

The scene in question involves Macaulay Culkin’s character, Kevin McCallister, encountering Trump at The Plaza Hotel in New York City. According to Columbus, Trump insisted on being included in the film as a condition for allowing the crew to film at his hotel. While the cameo was initially intended to be edited out, a positive audience reaction during a test screening led to its retention in the final cut.
Reflecting on the situation years later, Columbus expressed dismay over the cameo, referring to it as a “curse” that he wishes could be removed. Despite Trump’s denial of pressurising his way into the film, Columbus remains resolute in his stance that he would never beg a non-professional actor for a role. The director lamented that the cameo has now become an unwanted burden for him.
Although Chris Columbus acknowledged the desire to remove Trump’s cameo, he admitted that it is no longer possible. The director joked about facing deportation if he were to make such a drastic edit, highlighting the public scrutiny surrounding the issue. Notably, Trump has made appearances in other films before his foray into politics, with Home Alone 2 being one of the most well-known due to its perennial popularity during the holiday season.
The controversy surrounding Trump’s cameo in Home Alone 2 resurfaced in 2019 when his appearance was edited out of Canadian broadcasts of the film. This move led Macaulay Culkin to express support for removing Trump from the classic Christmas movie. In response to a fan’s tweet suggesting Trump be replaced with an older version of himself in the film, Culkin humorously endorsed the idea.
As debates continue regarding Trump’s cameo in Home Alone 2, it serves as a reminder of the complexities that can arise when real-life figures are included in fictional narratives. The lasting impact of such decisions on both the film and those involved in its creation underscores the delicate balance between entertainment and politics in the world of cinema.
