In a recent turn of events, a Texas teen accused of fatally stabbing a 17-year-old student at a track meet has been released from jail after his bond was significantly reduced. Karmelo Anthony, 17, saw his bond reduced from $1 million to $250,000 by a Collin County judge, as reported by The Dallas Morning News. Subsequently, he was released from custody on the same day.

The incident in question occurred on April 2 when Anthony allegedly stabbed Austin Metcalf, also 17, under a tent at a track meet in Frisco. Anthony claimed he acted in self-defense, stating that Metcalf had grabbed him and attempted to move him during an argument, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by PEOPLE.
Upon appearing in court on Monday morning, Anthony, clad in a yellow jumpsuit and handcuffed, was supported by his parents who attested to his clean record and active involvement in school activities. His defence attorney, Mike Howard, argued that the reduced bond was more fitting given Anthony’s background.
The judge imposed strict conditions upon Anthony’s release, including house arrest and the wearing of an ankle monitor. Anthony is only permitted to leave home with prior judicial approval for essential matters such as legal consultations or court appearances. Howard emphasised that every individual has the right to defend themselves in situations of perceived threat.
The teenager’s possession of a knife, the weapon allegedly used in the incident, was a point of interest during the proceedings, though details were not disclosed by the defence. Anthony’s family has reportedly faced threats following his arrest, prompting a fundraiser to support his legal expenses, which garnered substantial contributions.
On the other side, a GoFundMe campaign initiated by Metcalf’s father has also received significant support, highlighting the impact of the tragedy on both families involved. Described as a promising and charismatic young man, Metcalf was remembered fondly by his loved ones for his leadership qualities and passion for football.
In light of the contrasting perspectives on the case, the community awaits further developments as the legal process unfolds. The incident has underscored the complexities of self-defence claims and the ensuing implications on individuals and their families. As details continue to emerge, the focus remains on seeking justice and understanding in the aftermath of this unfortunate event.
