A 69-year-old Charleston man is facing murder charges in connection with the tragic death of 64-year-old Harry Bennett, who was found stabbed in his Johns Island apartment in 2017. Henry James Brisbane was arrested on 20 October and is charged with murder as well as possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, according to a statement from the Charleston Police Department.

Bennett was discovered dead within his apartment on 20 August 2017, after a concerned neighbour alerted the authorities when he did not respond to knocks on his door. Responding officers found the victim in a chair, suffering from multiple stab wounds, indicating a violent attack took place.

The initial investigation into Bennett’s death included interviews with numerous individuals, including Brisbane himself. Unfortunately, despite these efforts, the case went cold as detectives struggled to uncover decisive evidence to progress their inquiries. For nearly nine years, the circumstances surrounding Bennett’s murder remained unsolved, causing immense heartache for his family and friends.
Earlier this year, however, a dedicated team of detectives at the Charleston Police Department revisited the cold case. They collaborated with the department’s Forensic Services Division and their DNA Technical Leader to re-examine the evidence. This renewed scrutiny revealed several items suitable for DNA analysis that had previously been overlooked.
The results from the advanced DNA testing reportedly established a connection between Brisbane and the crime scene. This pivotal finding prompted police to make an arrest, marking a significant development in a case that had long seemed stagnant.
In a statement addressing the arrest, Chief Chito Walker praised the relentless efforts of his detectives and forensic teams, emphasizing their unwavering commitment to pursuing justice on behalf of victims and their families. Walker expressed hope that the apprehension of Brisbane would provide a measure of closure to Bennett’s loved ones and reaffirmed the department’s dedication to solving cases, no matter how much time has elapsed.
As the legal proceedings now unfold, police are urging anyone who may have additional information regarding the case to come forward. Members of the public are encouraged to contact the Charleston Police Department at 843-720-2422 or to submit tips online through their official website.
The arrest of Brisbane not only sheds light on a long-standing mystery but also serves as a reminder of the importance of continued investigative work in cold cases. While the path to justice can be long and arduous, the commitment displayed by law enforcement agencies illustrates the determination to seek answers for victims and their families.
As the community reflects on this case, it underscores the pervasive impact of violent crime on families and neighbourhoods, along with the need for ongoing vigilance and support in seeking justice for those who can no longer speak for themselves.
