A Georgia family has recently opened up about their harrowing experience during a deadly earthquake in Myanmar, shedding light on the challenges they faced during this traumatic event. Joshua Fekete, together with his wife Tiffany and their two children, had moved to Bangkok for a teaching opportunity when tragedy struck. Joshua, seemingly healthy before the move, was rushed to the hospital on March 28 and later suffered a heart attack, sepsis, and clogged arteries, reported ABC affiliate WSB.

As Joshua awaited surgery in a Bangkok hospital, the 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Myanmar shook the region, with tremors felt in Thailand where they were situated. The chaos of the earthquake meant some patients had to be moved outside to the parking lot at ViMUT Hospital where Joshua was being treated. Despite the challenging circumstances, there is good news for the Fekete family as Joshua has been released from the hospital and is now on the path to recovery from his surgeries.
Tiffany, Joshua’s wife, shared that he is doing much better, regaining mobility and appetite, despite the traumatic experience. She expressed gratitude towards the medical team for prioritising Joshua’s life over financial concerns, stating, “My husband’s life was more important than the expenses. They are truly heroes.” The hospital initially demanded a hefty upfront payment before proceeding with the necessary surgeries, but fortunately, a kind-hearted individual stepped in to help by providing a deposit.
Although Joshua’s family faced challenges with the hospital’s financial department, including being told to pay $16,000 upfront for discharge, they were eventually able to agree on a payment plan after involving the U.S. Embassy. With the support of a GoFundMe campaign to cover the medical costs, Joshua was able to settle the outstanding balance and officially leave the hospital premises.
Looking ahead, Joshua mentioned that the surgeon has plans for follow-up appointments, but the family is understandably apprehensive about returning to the hospital. They are hoping for a smooth journey back to the United States, with ongoing support from their insurance company and relevant authorities. As they navigate the aftermath of this unsettling experience, their focus remains on Joshua’s recovery and well-being.
