Authorities revealed that search efforts for grizzly bears in the region are ongoing, prompting police to take precautionary measures for local children. In a statement, the Nuxalk Nation based in Bella Coola confirmed that officers will be escorting students from school buses to their homes. They have also initiated additional night patrols and are providing voluntary rides to ensure young residents can return home safely, especially during these uneasy times.

Balcarras and Reed had embarked on a walk on Saturday, October 31, but their failure to return home raised alarms among family members. Following their report of the pair missing, search teams quickly mobilised but unfortunately, they faced an agonising wait for news. Balcarras’ body was recovered on Monday, November 2, while her daughter’s was located the next day.
The loss has devastated their family, with Balcarras being a mother of four and a grandmother. Having recently relocated to Bella Coola to initiate a new chapter in her life, she was also starting a job at a local school. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to assist with funeral costs, as well as to provide financial support for her grieving family.
In a heartfelt tribute, the Central Coast Teachers’ Association paid their respects, highlighting Balcarras’ dedication to her students and her commitment to fostering relationships in the community. Their statement underscored her ability to connect with students, particularly in the wake of multiple community losses, asserting, “At the heart of her work was a commitment to building relationships and helping students feel known, heard, and supported.”
Loved ones described Selah Reed as a bright young individual with her future ahead of her. A message on the fundraising page expressed profound sadness over the pair’s untimely deaths, describing them as “two peas in a pod.” Josh Balcarras, Jenny’s brother, shared with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation that the mother and daughter cherished spending time together, particularly on their hiking trips.
In response to the ongoing situation, a curfew has been instituted in the area as wildlife officials conduct an extensive search for bears, ensuring further safety measures are taken. The presence of officers will aim to reassure parents as they remain vigilant in protecting the local children.
As the investigation continues, the community is left mourning the untimely deaths of Balcarras and Reed while rallying to support their family during this incredibly difficult time. Memorial tributes have begun to emerge, showcasing the love and respect the mother and daughter engendered in the hearts of those who knew them.
