A tragic incident unfolded on the morning of Friday, 6 November, when a bus carrying 43 passengers, including 15 children, crashed in Lent, eastern France. The accident occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. local time and has resulted in two fatalities, comprising a young girl and an 18-year-old man.
The bus was travelling between Lyon and Bourg-en-Bresse when it left the road, leading to significant consequences for many on board. Emergency responders reported that alongside the two deceased, three individuals suffered serious injuries, while another 13 passengers sustained minor injuries. The Bourg-en-Bresse prosecutor’s office confirmed the details of the casualties to various media outlets, including the BBC.
In response to the crash, a full-scale emergency operation ensued. Around 102 firefighters, equipped with 58 vehicles, assisted alongside 50 military police officers and eight mobile emergency medical units. Their swift action was crucial in managing the aftermath of the collision, which left the community in shock.

Yves Cristin, the mayor of Lent, expressed his disbelief over the accident, stating, “We don’t understand why the bus left its lane.” He described the scene as an “absolute tragedy” for the local community. Cristin noted that the area where the crash occurred is not known for hazardous conditions, mentioning that the road was slightly damp at the time but not problematic enough to cause such an event.

Further detailing the incident, the mayor explained that the bus veered across the road and ended up in a ditch, colliding with a tree that lay in its path. This impact was unfortunately what made the accident particularly severe. Authorities have not disclosed the age of the young girl who tragically lost her life, keeping details about her identity private at this time.
The bus driver was among those injured and has been taken to hospital. Reports indicate that he has not yet been questioned by investigators. Early tests on the driver reportedly returned negative results, but definitive conclusions are pending further toxicology analysis. The authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the crash to understand why the bus deviated from its intended route.
Jean-François Debat, the mayor of Bourg-en-Bresse, provided additional context about the accident, emphasising that the “entire left side” of the vehicle was affected during the collision. The seriousness of the crash has prompted responses from officials at various levels, including Philippe Tabarot, the French minister of transport, who announced plans to visit the crash site for a firsthand assessment.
As investigations continue, the Bourg-en-Bresse prosecutor’s office is being contacted for further comments regarding the situation, although they have yet to respond officially. The community is grappling with the implications of this incident, reflecting on its impact and the vulnerabilities faced while travelling.
This unfortunate event serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers present on the roads and the need for ongoing safety measures to protect passengers. The aftermath is likely to have lasting effects, not only on the victims and their families but also on the local community as it seeks to recover from this devastating loss.
