Heather Hemmens, the well-known actress, recently shared some unexpected memories from her wedding day, which took place at her home in California on August 8, 2026. Married to Nick Wajda, the actress opened up about a rather unfortunate incident involving the dessert she had chosen to celebrate their nuptials.

During a conversation with PEOPLE at the Love of a Lifetime Celebration in Los Angeles on November 4, Hemmens recounted the event that nearly derailed the special day. The couple had decided to replace the traditional wedding cake with a heart-shaped pie, adorned with cherry and strawberry-rhubarb fillings, which paid homage to their New England roots. Unfortunately, the delivery did not go as planned.

“The baker not only messed up the pie, but it collapsed in the van during transit,” Hemmens explained. “It ended up spilling down the steps to our house, and it looked like a bloody massacre because of the cherry and strawberry-rhubarb,” she added, detailing the aftermath that required her mother and sisters to get on their hands and knees to clean up the mess.
Despite the mishap, the couple managed to salvage their party. Hemmens quickly turned to on-demand delivery service Postmates to order cakes, ensuring there was a dessert to serve their guests after their Italian-themed dinner. “I ordered three little cakes so we had something to cut, and they let me write ‘just married’ on one of them. It all worked out in the end, and it makes for a good story,” she reflected with a smile.
Hemmens expressed that the decision to marry at home was one of the best choices they made. The wedding was an intimate affair, with only thirty close friends and family in attendance. “It felt like a massive house party,” she said. “We had incredible food and Italian wines in honour of our honeymoon. It was very special and memorable.”
Reflecting on her life as a newlywed, Hemmens shared that the transition has been smooth. “Nothing has changed,” she stated. “It’s been amazing. I was gone for about a month working on a film, and now I’m gearing up for another project. This is life, and we get to live it together, which is awesome.”
Describing their home life, Hemmens noted their shared love for staying in. “We’re both homebodies, which is handy when you want to do something like get married at home,” she explained. “We both work hard, but we also know how to play hard. He’s a lawyer, and I run my own business, so we balance each other out well.”
Currently, Hemmens is starring alongside Taye Diggs in the Lifetime movie “Terry McMillan Presents: Paradise with You,” which was filmed on the idyllic island of Nevis in the Caribbean. She expressed excitement about her role, stating, “As soon as I heard ‘island’ and Taye Diggs’ name, I was in. Working with the production company 9th House and Lifetime opened up a whole new world for me. The romance and tropics made it a perfect fit.”
Fans of Hemmens can look forward to the premiere of “Terry McMillan Presents: Paradise with You,” which is set to air on Lifetime on November 7 at 8:00 p.m. EST. As she embarks on this new chapter both personally and professionally, it’s clear that her journey as a newlywed and actress continues to blossom amidst the chaos of wedding preparations and film productions.
