Cory Wharton, known for his role on the reality show “The Challenge,” has recently shared a heartfelt update regarding his family, revealing the reasons behind his absence from this year’s New York City Marathon. The 35-year-old star took to Instagram on November 3 to inform his followers that he was unable to participate in the marathon, initially scheduled for November 1, due to his six-year-old daughter Mila suffering a broken arm that necessitated surgery.

In his Instagram post, Wharton expressed his pain at seeing his child in distress, saying, “Man… it’s been one hell of a weekend. 💔 Mila ended up breaking her arm and had to have surgery yesterday.” He praised Mila for her resilience during the ordeal, noting that despite her injury, they managed to celebrate Halloween by trick-or-treating and carving pumpkins, all while she bravely navigated the activities with one arm.

Wharton had been looking forward to the marathon for months, describing it as an event he trained diligently for. He added, “Unfortunately, that also meant I wasn’t able to make it to NYC to run the marathon this year,” emphasising the emotional weight of his decision to stay home.

The situation was compounded by concerns regarding his younger daughter, Maya, aged four, who underwent a heart procedure earlier in October. Maya was born with tricuspid atresia, a congenital heart defect that requires ongoing medical intervention. Wharton candidly shared how overwhelming these past weeks have been for him and his family. “I’ll be real with y’all… I’m tired. Mentally, emotionally, physically,” he stated, acknowledging the toll that his daughters’ health challenges have taken on him.
In his message, he reflected on the broader perspective that life has a way of presenting unanticipated challenges. “Life keeps teaching me that no matter how hard you think you have it, somebody out there is fighting a battle you know nothing about,” he wrote, vowing to maintain a positive outlook despite the difficulties they are facing. He admitted, however, that the current circumstances have been particularly challenging for him as a father.
Wharton also took the opportunity to express his apologies to those who were eager to watch him run in the marathon, while expressing gratitude for raising $12,000 for research into congenital heart defects, an issue close to his heart. “Right now, my family needs me, and that’s exactly where I’m supposed to be,” he conveyed. “Life doesn’t always go according to our plans, but that doesn’t mean we stop moving forward. One day at a time. Keep the faith.”
On a more positive note, Wharton previously provided an update on Maya’s health through Instagram, where he celebrated her recent successful heart procedure. “Yesterday, Maya went through another heart procedure, and I’m just so thankful that everything went well,” he noted, explaining that the doctors had managed to address several of her collateral blood vessels, which may improve her oxygen levels.
He has been open about the emotional rollercoaster that accompanies his daughter’s medical journey. “I’ve shared Maya’s journey with you all from the beginning. The good days, the scary days, and everything in between,” Wharton remarked, underscoring the importance of resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity.
In closing, he expressed his gratitude to his followers for their support. “Thank you to everyone who continues to pray for Maya and check on her. We feel that love more than you know,” he said optimistically, assuring that while the fight for Maya’s health is ongoing, they view every medical milestone as a victory.
Cory Wharton’s commitment to his daughters during these trying times highlights the challenging balance between personal ambition and family responsibilities, illuminating the profound love and dedication often found in the lives of parents confronting unexpected difficulties.
