In an emotional reflection, Rebecca Gayheart has shared her memories of the final days she spent with her late ex-husband, Eric Dane, during interviews promoting his recently released posthumous memoir titled *My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments*. The memoir, completed by Dane prior to his passing, offers a glimpse into his life while Gayheart spoke of their family’s experience during his struggle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Dane, known for his role in *Euphoria*, died on 19 February at 53 after a public battle with ALS, a disease he revealed he had been diagnosed with in April 2025. In an interview that aired on the *Today* show on 3 November, Gayheart described the experience of visiting Dane in hospital during what would become their final moments together. She recounted how she and their daughters, Billie, 16, and Georgia, 14, attempted to make the hospital room as comfortable as possible for him during his last visit without realising it would be their last.
Reflecting on the many hospital visits Dane had previously endured, Gayheart stated, “He had gone to the hospital so many times before, and they would patch him up, so to speak, and he would come home.” The family had hoped for more recoveries, and Gayheart shared that they had not anticipated the gravity of the situation on that particular visit. “I had no idea that that was it, that that week was going to be our last week,” she said, expressing how both she and the children were blindsided by the rapid change in circumstances.

As the days progressed in the hospital, Gayheart recalled that the tone of conversations with the medical team shifted dramatically, hinting at the seriousness of Dane’s condition. “Everything shifted,” she said, describing how the family began to realise the terminal nature of his illness. Despite the situation, Gayheart noted that Dane retained a degree of awareness and was able to communicate his feelings, albeit with difficulty. “He knew he was dying and was figuring it out as we went,” she commented, showcasing the strength and openness they maintained amid the devastating circumstances.
In a bid to provide comfort during their final moments together, Gayheart and the children set up a space in the hospital room that felt personal. “We camped out there with him, brought battery-operated candles, played Dane’s favourite music,” she said. This effort, she explained, was about trying to offer him as pleasant an environment as possible during those heartbreaking final days.

Dane and Gayheart, who tied the knot in 2004, had begun divorce proceedings in 2018. However, in March 2025, she requested to dismiss the divorce, leading to a peaceful resolution at the time of his diagnosis. Dane expressed his gratitude for his family during this challenging period, which provided him with a support system while facing ALS.
Throughout this journey, Gayheart took on the role of primary caregiver for Dane. In a previous essay, she described managing his care team, revealing the extent of the emotional and physical challenges that came with the territory. In an interview with *PEOPLE* in September, she shared that their family was coping as well as possible in the months following Dane’s death. “I think it’s definitely a challenging season, but we’re doing our best,” she conveyed.
The survivors are now navigating their own lives, with both daughters transitioning into high school. Gayheart emphasised the importance of staying close to her children during this significant time of change. She further expressed understanding that the path of grief and loss is unique to each family, remarking on how many people might offer well-meaning advice but fail to grasp the complexities of the journey ahead.
*My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments* is now available for readers seeking insight into Eric Dane’s life and the experiences faced by him and his loved ones during their struggles with illness. Gayheart’s poignant memories serve as a testament to their shared resilience as a family in the face of adversity.
