Toronto police are actively searching for three suspects following a brutal home invasion that occurred in the early hours of October 29. The incident took place at the home of David Morton, the CEO of The Mac Group, located in the affluent Bridle Path neighbourhood. One of the suspects, identified as 23-year-old Daijohn Richards, was found in a local hospital with a gunshot wound shortly after the home invasion, leading investigators to believe he may have been accidentally shot by one of his accomplices.
Richards arrived at the hospital shortly after the break-in, suffering from a gunshot wound to his right shoulder. Inspector Kristy Smith from the Toronto Police Service’s Hold Up Squad confirmed at a recent press conference that police interacted with Richards while he was receiving treatment. However, the authorities did not have sufficient evidence at that time to make an arrest, allowing him to leave before further inquiries could be made.

Police have since issued a Canada-wide warrant for Richards, with multiple charges pending against him. These include four counts of discharging a firearm with intent to wound, four counts of robbery with a firearm, and three counts of aggravated assault. Additionally, he faces charges of breaking and entering, possession of a prohibited device, and wearing a disguise with intent.

Authorities have issued an appeal for public help in locating Richards and his accomplices, with police urging anyone with information to contact the Hold Up Squad. They have also described the three individuals as armed and dangerous, emphasizing the potential risk they pose to the community.
The violent home invasion itself involved three suspects who forced their way into Morton’s residence around 3:40 a.m. armed with firearms and a hammer. The intruders demanded valuables from Morton and his family before engaging in a violent altercation. During the struggle, Morton, who is 75 years old, and two of his daughters, ages 26 and 28, suffered gunshot wounds. Morton and his 64-year-old wife were additionally assaulted with the hammer.
While police have not confirmed the identities of the victims, local media reports suggest they include Morton’s wife, Doriana Zohil-Morton, and their daughters, Cristina and Maggie. The horrifying nature of the crime has left the family shaken, prompting Morton to speak out about the traumatic experience.
In a statement, Morton described the home invasion as a “terrifying” experience and expressed disbelief that anyone should have to endure such violence in their own home. “It is difficult to put into words the trauma of experiencing something so horrific in the one place where everyone should feel safest,” he said. “No family should ever have to experience this.”
While the police have made strides in identifying one suspect, two others remain at large, and the search continues. On social media, Toronto police clarified that while they recognised the connection between Richards and the home invasion, gathering enough evidence for an arrest is a separate concern. They reiterated that mere suspicion is insufficient for making an arrest without solid evidence to back it up.
In an increasingly alarming trend, this incident highlights the vulnerabilities families may face even in affluent neighbourhoods, raising questions about safety and security across the region. The community is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or information that could assist in apprehending the remaining suspects.
The investigation is ongoing, and police continue to work diligently in their efforts to bring the culprits to justice. In the meantime, the Morton family’s experience serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety measures and community awareness in preventing such incidents in the future. Residents are advised to take extra precautions and stay informed about crime in their areas as the police work to resolve this shocking case.
