In an innovative blend of healthcare and entertainment, physicians and healthcare professionals in Georgia are using their musical talents to raise funds for uninsured residents. This initiative revolves around “The Sound of Medicine,” an annual benefit concert aimed at supporting the Rapha Clinic, a nonprofit organisation dedicated to providing essential medical and dental services to those without insurance across West Georgia.

The Rapha Clinic, which operates from a modest trailer in Temple, heavily relies on volunteers and donations to sustain its operations. Dr. Amy Eubanks, an internal medicine physician who serves as the clinic’s medical director, plays a substantial role in this effort. In addition to her medical responsibilities, Dr. Eubanks performs as a singer and guitarist with her band, Mcpherson Street, at the concert. She expresses that the event is a unique opportunity for medical practitioners to support the clinic in a fun and engaging manner, outside the confines of their usual medical roles.

“Funds raised during the event help us cover the clinic’s operating expenses for a significant part of the year,” Dr. Eubanks shares. The clinic addresses what she refers to as the “care gap,” helping individuals who earn slightly too much to qualify for Medicaid yet cannot afford private health insurance. Following recent changes to federal healthcare subsidies, Dr. Eubanks notes that the services provided by the Rapha Clinic have become more vital than ever.
Scheduled for Thursday, 5th November, 2023, this year’s concert marks the twelfth anniversary of The Sound of Medicine. Anticipation is building within the community for this year’s festivities. Gastroenterologist Howard Seeman, a long-time performer and leader of the Dakota Dodge Band, highlights the deeper connections formed through music. He believes that while practising medicine brings satisfaction, performing for a good cause offers its own joy and fulfilment.
Terry Lowry, conductor and music director of the Carroll Symphony Orchestra, sees the concert as more than just a performance. He calls it a “wonderful reminder that music can do more than entertain,” underscoring the importance of coming together to effect real change in the lives of those within the community who are in need.
The support for this event encompasses not only musicians but also the local medical and dental community, which plays a crucial role in the clinic’s mission. Amy Parrish, the clinic’s marketing director and co-chair, emphasises the impact of community involvement, stating, “These incredible partners understand that the mission of Rapha Clinic helps keep the uninsured out of the emergency room, which ultimately contributes to the overall health of our community.” She adds that it is often workers from local businesses who require the most support, highlighting the tangible benefits of the clinic’s services.
Attendees of The Sound of Medicine can look forward to an evening filled with live music and the opportunity to participate in a silent auction, with all proceeds dedicated to bolstering the clinic’s mission of providing affordable healthcare to adults without insurance. The concert has not only raised funds but also fostered a sense of ownership among patients, some of whom have taken it upon themselves to care for the clinic’s property, including landscaping.
For Dr. Eubanks, combining her two passions—music and healthcare—is about facilitating access to essential services. “A healthy community benefits everyone,” she asserts, reinforcing the interconnectedness of community health and wellbeing.
The 2023 instalment of The Sound of Medicine will be hosted at Venue 1625 in Carrollton, Georgia, from 6:30 PM to 9 PM. Individuals interested in supporting this worthy cause can purchase tickets or donate online. The event stands as a testament to the spirit of community engagement and the innovative approaches being employed to address healthcare disparities in the region. By merging music with philanthropy, these healthcare professionals are not only entertaining but also making a meaningful impact on the lives of their fellow residents.
