Actor Mike Manning is currently making waves with his portrayal of Bradley “Smitty” Smith in the new CBS soap opera, *Beyond the Gates*. Ahead of the 53rd annual Daytime Emmy Awards, Manning shared insights into the challenges and joys he has encountered after relocating from Los Angeles to Atlanta for the role.

Manning, who previously starred in *Days of Our Lives* and reality TV’s *The Real World: DC*, described his transition as a “wild ride.” Despite the ups and downs of moving his life across the country, he expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity to work on the daytime drama. “It’s truly a dream come true to be part of this production,” he remarked.
However, the transition came with its difficulties. Manning, 39, revealed that he is currently navigating a long-distance relationship with his husband, who remains in Los Angeles along with their two older dogs. The arrangement has posed emotional challenges, as he mentioned, “That’s a little bit tough to deal with; the distance has been hard on both of us.” Fortunately, Manning has been able to return to Los Angeles periodically thanks to breaks in filming, and he is optimistic that his husband will join him in Atlanta within the next couple of years.
Beyond the struggles of a long-distance relationship, Manning is embracing the charm of southern living. Moving to Atlanta has opened up a world of new experiences for him. “The people are incredibly friendly, and the food is delightful,” he commented, admitting that he has found a plethora of favourite restaurants within a short distance of his Midtown condo. “Honestly, I’ve put on some weight since moving here because I can’t stop enjoying all this amazing food.”
Manning has also been touched by the heartwarming southern hospitality he has encountered. “People are so kind here; it’s like aggressive kindness is the norm. I’ve really enjoyed that,” he said, praising the supportive atmosphere on the *Beyond the Gates* set as well. “This is the kindest set I’ve ever worked on, and it’s comforting.”
With a background in the fast-paced soap opera industry, Manning’s experiences have not gone unnoticed. He expressed his admiration for the unique qualities of *Beyond the Gates*, noting that this new show represents the first hour-long soap focused on a Black family from its inception. “It’s showing Black excellence in a way we haven’t really seen on soaps before,” he explained, celebrating the show’s significance.
Manning is particularly excited about the show’s milestone, as it has received an impressive 15 nominations for this year’s Daytime Emmys, setting a record for the most nominations received by a soap opera in its debut year. He commended the show’s creators, stating, “They understood that there has been an underserved community of soap fans for decades, and they made this show with purpose and care.”
Currently, Manning’s character is at the centre of a murder investigation on the show, adding a thrilling twist to his storyline. “I enjoy seeing Smitty get into trouble,” he mentioned, expressing anticipation for the upcoming plot developments that may unfold.
Looking ahead, Manning is eager to explore Smitty’s background further. “I would love to learn more about where he comes from,” he mused, indicating his interest in delving into his character’s past while teasing the dramas that upcoming holiday episodes may present. He is also curious about the escapades of his on-screen children and how their storylines may evolve.
As *Beyond the Gates* continues its run, Manning’s enthusiastic commitment to his role exemplifies the exciting new direction of daytime television. With its groundbreaking themes and engaging storytelling, the show aims not only to entertain but also to reflect a wider range of experiences. Fans can catch all the action as the series is available for streaming on Paramount+.
