Acclaimed British actress Judi Dench is set to release her highly anticipated memoir, *Is It Too Late to Make a Run For It?*, on 3 November. Written in collaboration with Brendan O’Hea, the memoir promises an insightful journey through Dench’s remarkable life, career, and the significant people who have influenced her along the way.

In connection to the memoir’s launch, Dench revealed to *PEOPLE* some cherished memories of her late friend and fellow actor, Robin Williams. The pair’s paths crossed multiple times throughout their careers, notably during the 1996 film adaptation of *Hamlet*, directed by Kenneth Branagh. Williams also presented Dench with the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Queen Elizabeth I in *Shakespeare in Love* during the 1999 Academy Awards.

However, it was a more personal encounter far removed from the limelight that left a lasting impression on Dench. The actress recalled a visit to Scottish actor Billy Connolly’s home, where she and her husband, Michael Williams, were present for a celebratory evening that included a ceilidh and a bonfire. At that time, Michael was struggling with serious health issues.
Dench recounted a poignant moment during the gathering, describing how she noticed her husband growing fatigued as they prepared to leave. “Robin Williams appeared beside us and offered to help, but Michael said he could manage,” Dench remembered. “And Robin said, ‘Well, I think I’ll ride shotgun anyway’, which was such a lovely thing to say.” She shared her admiration for Williams’ empathy and care, noting how he provided support without being intrusive.
Williams, known for his comedic brilliance and deep sensitivity, tragically passed away by suicide in August 2014 at the age of 63. Dench’s memories of their time together underline the profound impact he had on her life, both as a friend and a fellow artist.
In her upcoming memoir, Dench explores not only her journey in acting but also the emotional landscape of her life. Reflecting on her past, she remarked, “I’ve been amazed at how much I remember from my childhood. Ask me what I did yesterday and I couldn’t tell you, but I can recount in vivid detail what I did over 80 years ago — the holidays, the friendships and the mischief I got up to at school.”
*Is It Too Late to Make a Run For It?* also features Dench’s interactions with numerous other notable figures in the entertainment industry, including the likes of Sophia Loren and Sidney Poitier. It delves into her enduring connection with Michael Williams, who passed away in 2011. Even after many years, Dench expressed, “I still miss him. Even now, 25 years on, I imagine he’s going to walk in through the front door.”
The memoir promises to encapsulate the essence of Dench’s illustrious career and her personal reflections with warmth and humour. As she prepares for the book’s release, readers can expect a candid portrayal of a life well-lived, rich with stories and lessons from the world of theatre and film.
For those eager to delve into Dench’s memories and experiences, *Is It Too Late to Make a Run For It?* is currently available for pre-order. It will be published under St. Martin’s Press and promises to provide an unforgettable insight into the life of one of Britain’s most beloved actresses.
As interest in Dench’s work continues, her memoir serves not only as a testimony to her achievements but as a reminder of the relationships that have shaped her remarkably resilient spirit.
