Harrison Butker, kicker for the Kansas City Chiefs, has admitted to facing significant challenges this season after missing two crucial field goals during a disappointing 20-3 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks on October 25. The 31-year-old has seen his performance decline, prompting concerns from both fans and the coaching staff alike.

Despite past successes, including a reputation for consistency, Butker acknowledged that his form has taken a downturn. “I try to take one kick at a time,” he told reporters following the game. He emphasised that the unpredictable nature of kicking means that some attempts simply won’t go in. “It’s kind of the life of a kicker — it either goes in or it doesn’t, and unfortunately, there’s been some kicks that haven’t gone in,” he said.

In the match against Seattle, Butker’s first miss came just before halftime when he attempted a 58-yard field goal. The Chiefs were trailing 10-0 at that point, and the miss was particularly disheartening for the team. “It was just short,” he reflected. “Otherwise, it was in the middle. Obviously, you want to make it, but it was short.”
Things didn’t improve for Butker later in the game; he missed another kick in the fourth quarter, which could have narrowed the gap to just one touchdown. Acknowledging the missed opportunities, he added, “You just got to make it. Just pushed it.”
With a field goal percentage of only 68.8%, Butker is currently ranked among the lowest in the NFL for kickers this season. This statistic has raised eyebrows and created uncertainty surrounding his capabilities heading into the latter part of the season.
Head coach Andy Reid has expressed his concerns regarding Butker’s performance, stating, “He’s been one of the most consistent kickers in football, but he’s off a bit, so we’ve got to fix it.” Reid’s comments reflect the team’s hope that Butker can quickly regain his previous form, recognising the importance of reliable kicking in close games.
The struggles of Butker mirror the overall team performance, with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes also having an off day against Seattle. Completing 19 out of 33 passes for only 165 yards, Mahomes recorded one interception, marking it as one of the worst statistical performances of his career as a three-time Super Bowl champion.
Even tight end Travis Kelce, who has been instrumental in the Chiefs’ offence this season with two touchdowns to his name, was unable to find his rhythm against the Seahawks, finishing the game with only four receptions for 44 yards.
As the team looks to regroup, Butker’s performance will be a focal point in training this week. The pressure will be on him to improve and not let this dip in form affect his confidence and the team’s trajectory in the upcoming fixtures.
With the Chiefs facing a challenging season ahead, both Butker and Mahomes will need to step up to meet fan expectations and restore faith in their abilities. The next few games could prove crucial in determining not only the team’s playoff ambitions but also the future of individuals like Butker, who are under scrutiny after a challenging start.
