In a recent interview with GQ, Prince Harry shared insights into his family’s unexpected return to the United Kingdom. This marks the Duke of Sussex’s first discussion on the topic since relocating with his wife, Meghan Markle, and their two children, Archie and Lilibet.

Prince Harry explained that their return was not a long-term planned decision, but rather an opportunity that presented itself rather quickly. “When certain stars align, and it’s clear that this should or probably will end up being the case, then we lean into that,” he remarked, signifying a more spontaneous approach to the move than many would assume.
The couple, who had spent a significant six years in Montecito, California, following their withdrawal from royal duties in 2020, found themselves reassessing their living arrangements earlier this year. In August, it became known that the Sussexes intended to establish a home base in the UK while retaining their properties in California and Portugal. They officially returned to Britain in the same month, with Archie, aged seven, and Lilibet, aged five, enrolling in a British school shortly thereafter.
Harry, now 42, highlighted the contrast between this relocation and their past travel plans. “We’ve had plans in the past, and I think for lots of people, it’s like, if you’re going to make a big move like this, that’s going to take a lot of planning. For us, it was very short,” he stated, implying that the decision to return home had evolved rather spontaneously.
The Duke expressed a strong desire for his children to experience his childhood environment. He spoke to the significance of sharing his roots with Archie and Lilibet, stating, “To actually have my whole family there with me, the place that I grew up, wanting to be able to show my kids where I grew up and have them have the experiences to some extent that I had…provided real proper serious thinking as to: ‘This is an opportunity, let’s do it now.’”
When discussing the factors that motivated their move, Prince Harry emphasised the educational prospects awaiting Archie and Lilibet. Reflecting on their experience so far, he said, “I didn’t know how important it was to me. I always thought it was going to be something that we would try and do, but now they’ve been in school for two weeks. They’re loving it, and it’s just giving them a whole different experience.”
Interestingly, prior to their eventual move, the Duke had hinted at a potential return during a conversation with British singer Joss Stone at the WellChild Awards in September 2025. Stone recounted that Harry inquired about her experience relocating from Nashville back to the UK and was genuinely curious about how her family was settling in. This past interest seems to have resurfaced, culminating in his family’s recent relocation.
The Sussex family’s return to the UK was also notable for its timing. It followed a summer visit to Harry’s homeland, during which they had a significant reunion with King Charles and Queen Camilla at Highgrove House. This visit marked a touching moment for the family, as it was the first time Archie and Lilibet met their grandfather in person in four years.
As the family adjusts to their new surroundings, Prince Harry’s reflections illustrate the profound considerations that accompany such a significant move. With their children now immersed in British schools and the wider family circle, the Sussexes are embracing this new chapter in their lives, highlighting the importance of familial connections and the rich experiences associated with growing up in a country filled with history and tradition.
Despite the unpredictable nature of their return, it appears that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are committed to making the most of their time in the UK, while still maintaining ties to their homes across the Atlantic.
