A seemingly festive Thanksgiving celebration has taken a harrowing turn following the alleged poisoning of a woman during a family dinner in November 2025. Gudrun Casper-Leinenkugel is facing serious allegations after her daughter, Leela Livis, tragically died days after the event.

The last known communication Travis Peterson had with his daughter was on 27 November 2025. “I sent a text wishing her a happy Thanksgiving,” Peterson, 55, recalled. Livis, 32, responded with warmth, sharing in the holiday cheer. However, the family’s joy would soon diminish under horrific circumstances.

On that fateful evening, Livis, along with her half-sister Maija Lacey and Lacey’s boyfriend Richard Pegg, were gathered at their mother’s home for a post-Thanksgiving meal. The atmosphere quickly turned ominous when both Livis and Pegg fell severely ill after consuming wine from a screw-top bottle. While Pegg was hospitalised and eventually made a recovery, Livis’s condition led to her tragic demise. Her body was discovered at her home on 1 December.
Describing the gut-wrenching loss, Peterson expressed his heartbreak, “Losing Leela was a gut punch.” The shock of her death was compounded by the events that unfolded in the following months.
In early 2026, Gudrun Casper-Leinenkugel, 53, faced grave charges including murder in relation to Livis’s death, as well as attempted murder for the alleged poisoning of Lacey and Pegg. The authorities claim that the wine served that night was laced with a lethal chemical. Casper-Leinenkugel has entered a plea of not guilty.
As details of the case emerged, troubling revelations about Casper-Leinenkugel’s past began to surface. Authorities are reportedly re-examining the 2017 death of one of her former husbands, who is said to have succumbed to poisoning with a chemical analogous to that implicated in the Thanksgiving incident. This has raised questions about a possible pattern of behaviour.
The question now looms: what could drive a mother to commit such a heinous act against her own family? In a recent issue of PEOPLE, Casper-Leinenkugel’s surviving daughter suggested that her mother might be innocent, further complicating the narrative that surrounds this tragic case.
As the legal proceedings continue, the community remains shaken by this family tragedy. What was intended to be a celebration has unmistakably turned into a nightmare, leaving behind a grieving father and a bewildered family grappling with the aftermath of such a devastating loss.
The investigation remains ongoing, with law enforcement diligently working to piece together the full circumstances surrounding the incident. The spectre of this tragic Thanksgiving will linger as it unfolds in the courts, drawing attention to deeper familial issues and the possible consequences of unresolved conflicts.
