A woman’s alarming ordeal in New Jersey has drawn attention after she collapsed outside a restaurant following the consumption of a suspicious cup of tea. This incident unfolded in Fort Lee, where the woman had met with an acquaintance to address concerns about unauthorised activities in their shared financial accounts.

Prosecutors stated that the woman had arrived at the establishment on 8 September, where Rohweniven Bacani, 52, from Hackensack, had prepared a cup of tea for her. However, after taking a sip, the woman noticed an unusual taste and began feeling unwell, prompting her to leave the restaurant. Shortly thereafter, she collapsed outside, eventually waking up in a local hospital with no memory of how she had arrived there.

The disconcerting situation incited immediate concern, leading the woman to suspect that her companion may have deliberately poisoned her. In light of her suspicions, an investigation was launched by the Leonia police in tandem with the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office. Following a careful examination of the evidence over the course of several weeks, investigators alleged that Bacani had added a benzodiazepine—a class of drugs often used as sedatives—to the woman’s drink.
On 14 October, authorities arrested Bacani outside her home in Hackensack while charging her with third-degree aggravated assault. The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office released a statement confirming the charges and detailing the nature of the investigation, including the toxicology findings that supported the victim’s claims.
The alleged victim remained hospitalised for several days as medical staff monitored her condition. However, her health has since improved, according to announcements from the prosecutor’s office. The impact of this incident has highlighted ongoing concerns related to personal safety and the potential for harm in social situations, particularly when trust is at stake.
As this case progresses through the legal system, Bacani has been taken to the Bergen County Jail while awaiting her initial court appearance. The seriousness of the charges facing her underscores the potential consequences of such actions, as prosecutors stress the importance of accountability in cases of perceived interpersonal betrayal.
In the wake of these events, the community has been urged to remain vigilant in their interactions, especially in situations involving financial matters and closely held trusts. It serves as a reminder of the unforeseen dangers that may arise in seemingly benign settings.
The investigation remains active, with further developments expected as authorities continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding this distressing incident. As the case unfolds, both the alleged victim and Bacani’s legal representatives are likely to gain significant media attention, given the unsettling nature of the allegations.
