In a heartwarming testament to friendship and compassion, Karen Grant and Rosa Somsky, both employees at a Florida cancer centre, have revealed how their simultaneous battle with breast cancer has profoundly changed the nature of their relationship. The two women, who have worked together at AdventHealth Palm Coast’s Freytag Cancer Center for four years, were both diagnosed with the disease earlier this year, a shared experience that has created an unbreakable bond between them.

Karen, a 67-year-old social worker, and Rosa, 62, a breast care navigator, initially forged their relationship as colleagues, but their cancer journeys have introduced a new depth to their connection. “What I love about Karen is her compassion and the way she genuinely cares for people,” Somsky stated. “Going through breast cancer together changed that relationship forever.”
The contrasting yet complementary personalities of the two women appear to underpin their friendship. Somsky remarked that their differences allow them to find joy in each other’s company while also fostering an environment where they can be candid about their struggles. “We can make each other laugh, but we can also be completely honest with each other when things are hard,” she added.

For Somsky, who faced her breast cancer diagnosis nearly three decades after her first experience with the disease, the support of Grant proved invaluable. “There are some things about cancer that are difficult to explain to someone who hasn’t experienced them,” she noted. “Karen and I didn’t have to explain those things to each other. We could talk about fear, frustration, and the things we sometimes didn’t want to share with our loved ones because we didn’t want them to worry.”
The pair have developed a routine of checking in on one another, sharing texts and phone calls as they navigated their treatments, which provided comfort during difficult days. Somsky reminisced about the encouragement they offered each other, recalling moments when they would share high-fives in the hallway, acknowledging the unique challenges they both faced. “Cancer is not something either of us would ever choose to have in common, but having her beside me made me feel less alone,” Grant reflected.
While they both maintain professional boundaries with their patients, the women found solace in openly sharing their feelings and emotions about their health crises. “We shared experiences that no one else would be able to understand,” Grant explained. This mutual understanding helped foster a safe space for vulnerability that is often necessary in the world of cancer treatment.
Somsky also realised that her experience with cancer offered a newfound perspective on life. “The silver lining is perspective,” she remarked. “Cancer reminds you very quickly what matters. I am grateful to my husband, my family and friends, my coworkers, and those who supported me through this.” She expressed how her ordeal has given her deeper empathy for the patients she assists daily, reminding her to be more present both in her personal and professional life.
Through her journey, Somsky aims to inspire other women to be vigilant about their health. She expressed a desire for her story to resonate, encouraging those who may be experiencing similar challenges to advocate for themselves. “If sharing my story helps even one woman pay attention to a change in her body, advocate for herself, or feel less alone after hearing ‘you have cancer,’ then something meaningful has come out of a very difficult experience.”
Somsky also highlighted that being a nurse and a cancer navigator does not render one immune to fear or uncertainty, as becoming the patient has brought forth its own set of challenges. “This experience has taught me that it’s okay to need the same compassion and support that I spend every day giving to other people,” she said.
Through their shared battle with breast cancer, both Karen and Rosa have formed a bond that goes beyond friendship, illustrating the power of mutual support in times of adversity. Their story serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of self-advocacy and raising awareness about breast health, while also emphasising how relationships can be transformed by shared experiences, even those steeped in hardship.
