On 15 October, Manganiello took to Instagram, sharing a series of distressing photos that captured his long battle with the disease, which lasted nearly seven years. Among the images is a striking shot of himself, sitting shirtless next to a hospital bed shortly after undergoing emergency intestinal surgery back in 2016. He described the intense physical changes that followed the amputation of his large intestine, stating, “In the days following the amputation, my weight began to plummet. I would ultimately lose a total of 60 lbs. during the two weeks following the surgery.”

His health woes began with debilitating abdominal pain that left him unable to walk. The actor experienced an array of symptoms, including fevers, blistering rashes, fatigue, and rectal bleeding. Over the years, Manganiello underwent numerous colonoscopies and invasive procedures that ultimately left him reliant on an ostomy bag.
In one of the shared photographs, he displayed surgical scars along with visible rashes that further illustrated his ongoing battle. He provided insight into a subsequent surgery, known as anastomosis, during which his digestive tract was reconnected and the ostomy bag was removed. “It’s a shot of my abdomen after the reconnection/take down surgery,” he explained to his followers.
Throughout this harrowing journey, Manganiello faced various skin conditions, which he described as plaguing him during his fight against the autoimmune disease. In a candid selfie, the actor revealed the severity of his condition, saying that his skin, an immune organ in itself, was afflicted by multiple ailments.
Beyond the personal impact of this illness, Manganiello has indicated that it played a part in the downfall of his marriage with actress Sofía Vergara, which lasted for seven years. Reflecting on his declining health during this time, he stated, “I was getting sicker and sicker,” hinting at how the strain affected their relationship.
Despite the trials he faced, Manganiello remarked on the resilience he developed through adversity, stating, “I can’t believe I’m alive. I feel like I was reborn.” His experiences shed light on the often misunderstood nature of autoimmune diseases, which can frequently leave patients without definitive diagnoses and navigating a myriad of treatment options.
In his memoir, Manganiello aims to provide a firsthand account of his ordeal, emphasising the need for greater understanding surrounding autoimmune conditions. He shared his frustrations with the medical community’s approach, noting that such conditions often serve as a “dumping ground for things [doctors] don’t understand.”
The actor’s candidness serves as an important reminder of the challenges faced by those living with chronic illnesses. His journey not only highlights the physical repercussions of health struggles but also the emotional and relational impacts, providing valuable insight for readers and fans alike.
As Manganiello continues to advocate for awareness around autoimmune diseases through his platform, his story stands as a testament to resilience in the face of life-altering circumstances. His memoir, *Bloodlines*, aims to inspire and inform readers about the complexities of these often misdiagnosed and misunderstood conditions, seeking to foster empathy and awareness on the subject.
