Kayla Morrow’s journey into baking began as a heartfelt endeavour, aiming to connect with her family’s rich history. With a passion that blossomed during her motherhood, Morrow took to baking as a way to engage with her two daughters and to provide them with wholesome food. Following the birth of her children, she decided to explore baking more seriously, transforming a hobby into a viable business.

The name of the bakery, H & A Sourdough, is a tribute to her daughters, who she affectionately states are “the heart behind everything I do.” Morrow acknowledges that the bakery has surpassed her wildest expectations, evolving into more than just a side project. “What started as a love for baking and a hobby has grown into something bigger than we have ever imagined,” she shared with enthusiasm.
In addition to being a creative outlet, baking has also served a practical purpose for Morrow. After discovering that one of her daughters is immunocompromised, she was motivated to create healthier alternatives to store-bought goods, which often contain preservatives and artificial ingredients. “Baking from scratch has been a way for me to ensure my girls are eating safe and healthy food,” she explained.
H & A Sourdough Bakery will offer a range of products, with a focus on sandwich-style loaves of sourdough bread that are conveniently pre-sliced for customers. The menu will also feature an assortment of sweet treats such as cinnamon rolls, muffins, scones, and cookies, catering to the diverse tastes of their clientele.
The evolution of H & A Sourdough Bakery has been remarkable, especially considering its beginnings as a pop-up vendor at local farmers’ markets. Morrow reflects on those early days with fondness, recalling the simplicity of selling without signage or pricing. The growth to a dedicated storefront represents a significant milestone for the family-run business.
The grand opening event on the 17th of October will take place at 4 p.m. at the Fairlawn Plaza Shopping Center in southwest Topeka. Morrow and her family have organised a host of festive activities to celebrate the occasion, ensuring a fun-filled day for attendees. Guests can look forward to entertainment such as balloon artists and face painting, along with pumpkin decorating, which promises to delight children and adults alike.
Moreover, to add an element of surprise and excitement, the bakery has planned “golden ticket” giveaways. This initiative aims to engage the community and create a memorable experience for all participants, reflecting Morrow’s desire to build a warm and welcoming environment within her new establishment.
As the grand opening day approaches, the anticipation from the local residents continues to build. H & A Sourdough Bakery not only represents a new business venture for the Morrow family but also stands as a testament to the power of family, tradition, and community-focused values. With homemade products and a commitment to quality, it is poised to become a beloved addition to the Topeka culinary scene.
