Stanley Tucci has shared his thoughts on Kieran Culkin stepping into the shoes of his character for the upcoming prequel to “The Hunger Games,” titled “Sunrise on the Reaping.” The film is set to hit cinemas on 20 November and focuses on a younger version of the iconic Caesar Flickerman, a role that Tucci originally portrayed in the successful film series.

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Tucci reflected on Culkin’s performance as the flamboyant host of the Hunger Games, a character which made its debut in the original 2012 movie. The new film takes place 24 years prior to the first Hunger Games installment and features Culkin at the helm of the character, who has become a defining figure in the dystopian franchise.

Tucci, now 65, was last seen as Flickerman in 2015’s “Mockingjay – Part 2.” He is currently promoting his latest project, an action-comedy titled “Masterplan,” which will be available for streaming on Prime Video from 16 October. During this discussion about his new film, Tucci was asked about whether he plans to take his young children, Matteo (11) and Emilia (8), to see “Sunrise on the Reaping.” He expressed some reservations due to their age but praised Culkin’s talent, hoping audiences will enjoy the film.
Culkin, 44, joined the cast of “Sunrise on the Reaping” after recently receiving his first Academy Award for his role in the critically acclaimed film “A Real Pain.” His portrayal of Flickerman is expected to capture the essence of the character while exploring new depths, as the narrative delves into Flickerman’s backstory during a crucial period in Panem’s history.
In the new prequel, Culkin stars alongside a robust ensemble that includes notable actors such as Jesse Plemons, Ralph Fiennes, Glenn Close, and Elle Fanning. Many cast members portray younger versions of characters from the established series, adding a fresh dynamic to the storytelling.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time audiences have seen a Flickerman character in the franchise. Jason Schwartzman played Lucretius Flickerman in 2023’s “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” which is set more than sixty years before the original Hunger Games events. Culkin stated in a previous interview that his version of Caesar is the grandson of Lucretius, creating an intriguing familial connection within the storyline’s universe.
As the release date approaches, nostalgia surrounds Tucci’s iconic portrayal of Flickerman, which has captivated audiences for over a decade. The character, known for his lavish mannerisms and over-the-top presentation, has become a fan favourite, making Culkin’s interpretation highly anticipated.
In “Masterplan,” Tucci takes on a different role as a high-end thief who reunites with his estranged children to orchestrate a daring heist to steal the Mona Lisa from the Louvre in Paris. He described the film as reminiscent of classic heist movies from the 1960s and 70s, citing the charm and complexity of the character he plays.
Both “Sunrise on the Reaping” and “Masterplan” promise to deliver engaging narratives that showcase Tucci and Culkin’s undeniable talent. As the film industry prepares for the return to the world of Panem this November, it marks a significant moment for fans eager for more insights into the Hunger Games saga.
