Police in Georgia have confirmed that skeletal remains discovered ten years ago have been identified as belonging to Tammy Fortson, a woman who went missing in 1997. The Conyers Police Department announced on October 12 that Fortson vanished from the Fox Chase Court area nearly three decades ago.

In a press statement, law enforcement acknowledged the long-standing nature of the case, which had initially gone cold despite extensive investigative efforts at the time. “This identification represents a significant milestone in a case that has remained unresolved for many years,” police officials stated. They expressed hope that the identification would provide some answers to Fortson’s family, even as they recognised it could not erase the pain they have endured.
Skeletal remains were unearthed in 2016 in the vicinity of Christian Circle, a site believed to be one of the last locations where Fortson was seen alive. Following their discovery, certain portions of the remains were forwarded to the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification in 2019 for advanced DNA analysis. Unfortunately, at that time, authorities were unable to make a conclusive identification.

The case was reassigned in 2024 to Conyers Police Lieutenant Hinds, who coordinated additional forensic testing with the University of North Texas. After several months of analysis, new DNA testing revealed a significant likelihood that the remains were related to Ms. Fortson. According to police, the analysis established that the remains were “approximately 104 million times more likely to be the biological child” of an identified individual than an unrelated person.

Following this breakthrough, investigators collaborated with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and the medical examiner to confirm the remains as Tammy Fortson in July 2026. This pivotal development has reignited interest in the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.
Authorities have stated that their investigation into Fortson’s disappearance and subsequent death remains active and ongoing. As the case evolves, they are seeking help from the public, urging anyone with information—regardless of how minor it may seem—to come forward. The Newton County Sheriff’s Office can be reached at 678-625-1412 for tips.
The return of Fortson’s identity to her family comes after nearly three decades of uncertainty. While the identification brings some closure, it also raises further questions about the circumstances of her death. It appears that the search for justice and answers is far from over.
The case of Tammy Fortson is a poignant reminder of the enduring impact of missing persons cases on families and communities. The Conyers Police Department’s commitment to pursuing new leads and forensic advancements illustrates the law enforcement community’s dedication to resolving such mysteries.
As the investigation continues, Fortson’s family and friends are left grappling with the emotional aftermath of this tragic situation. While identification provides a measure of solace, it also stirs up painful memories and the reality of loss.
It is hoped that through collaborative efforts between law enforcement and the community, further insights can be uncovered as to what happened to Tammy Fortson all those years ago. Her story not only calls for justice, but also stands as a testament to the resilience of her loved ones, who have endured years of uncertainty regarding her fate.
