Nathan Lane Claims Discrimination Over Space Jam Casting Decision

Nathan Lane, the renowned Mid-Century Modern actor, recently revealed that he believes he lost out on a role in the 1996 film Space Jam due to discrimination based on his sexuality. In a candid interview with Vanity Fair, Lane disclosed that the director of the movie, Joe Pytka, allegedly deemed him “too gay” for the part he was vying for.

The 69-year-old actor shared his thoughts on the matter, expressing his uncertainty about what truly transpired behind closed doors in the entertainment industry. Lane stated, “I don’t know what goes on behind closed doors, but I can’t help but think that it played a part. I was told it did impact a movie … Space Jam. I was up for the part that the guy from Seinfeld wound up playing.”

Lane recounted the incident where Pytka reportedly saw him hosting the Tony Awards and formed the opinion that Lane’s perceived flamboyance made him unsuitable for the role. Ultimately, the character of Michael Jordan’s publicist Stan went to Wayne Knight instead of Lane.

Although Lane’s claims have stirred up controversy, a representative for Pytka, now 86, was not available for immediate comment on the matter. However, during a previous interview in 2016, Pytka mentioned considering various actors for the role of Stan, including Michael J. Fox and Chevy Chase, but did not specifically mention Lane.

In addition to his experience with Space Jam, Lane reflected on his notable role in The Birdcage alongside Robin Williams, which garnered him a Golden Globe nomination. Despite this success, the actor expressed disappointment at the lack of further opportunities following the film’s release.

According to Lane, his agent implied that being open about his sexuality may have hindered his career progression. The actor publicly came out as gay in 1999 and later married his longtime partner, theater producer Devin Elliott, in 2015.

Discussing homophobia in the film industry, Lane expressed his views on the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, emphasizing the limited opportunities available to openly gay actors. At a celebratory event in June 2024, Lane revealed his regrets about not being more vocal about his sexuality earlier in his career.

Looking ahead, Lane is set to appear in the upcoming Hulu series Mid-Century Modern, premiering on March 28. Despite the challenges he has faced, Lane continues to navigate the industry with resilience and determination.
