A quote attributed to Denzel Washington, claiming he is a “steadfast supporter” of former President Donald Trump, has been thoroughly discredited by both fact-checkers and Washington’s representative. The misinformation gained traction after Trump shared a screenshot purporting to show Washington praising his bravery and intelligence on October 12.

The false quote, posted on Trump’s Truth Social account, said Washington had worked with many individuals throughout his career but had “never met anyone braver, smarter, or who cares more about America than Donald Trump.” It further claimed, “He’s a great friend and an even better president. I’m proud to be a steadfast supporter, and I’ll never apologise for it. God Bless America and our president.” This post generated a significant response, with over 3,000 users sharing it on the platform shortly after it was published.

Fact-checking website Snopes promptly examined the claim and found it to be erroneous. Their report, released shortly before Trump shared the post, confirmed that the quote had been circulating for months without any credible attribution to Washington or any evidence of him speaking positively about Trump. This assertion echoed a similar situation earlier in the year when the same quote had also been misattributed to celebrity figures including Matthew McConaughey and Mick Jagger.
The origin of the quote can be traced back to a fan-run political commentary account on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). The account, known as @RedEagleUpdates, used the fabricated quote to generate engagement, asking followers if they agreed with the alleged endorsement. However, there was no verification from Washington or credible sources confirming the authenticity of the statement.
A representative for Denzel Washington, Alan Nierob, categorically dismissed the quote as “not real” and expressed ignorance regarding its origins. Nierob further mentioned that he had no knowledge of any interactions between Washington and Trump. His comments highlight the actor’s disconnection from the political assertions being falsely made on his behalf.
Notably, this is not the first instance of spurious claims attributing support for Trump to Washington. Snopes reported previously debunking similar rumours in both 2016 and 2018, which also falsely painted Washington as a supporter of the controversial former president.
Trump did not offer any additional commentary on the false endorsement, choosing only to reshare the misleading screenshot. Nonetheless, the situation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by public figures in navigating the complexities of social media and misinformation. Each instance of such false claims serves as a reminder of the ease with which misinformation can spread in the digital age.
As of now, both the White House and representatives for Washington did not provide further comments regarding the recent controversy. Nonetheless, this instance further cements the importance of fact-checking and the responsibility of social media users to verify the authenticity of information before sharing it.
The spread of misinformation can influence public perception, and in a politically charged environment, such claims can have substantial implications. As such, it remains crucial for individuals to critically evaluate the sources of political endorsements and commentary circulating across various platforms.
