Authorities from the Daytona Beach Police Department (DBPD) were alerted by the boys’ mother approximately 20 minutes after she noticed they were missing. The mother reported that she had taken a brief nap after feeding the children around 5pm local time. Upon waking, she realised both children and their dog were gone.

The police chief, Jakari Young, explained that the apartment contained a child safety lock on the door, but it appears the boys managed to figure out how to unlock it and leave the premises. Young commented on the heartbreaking nature of the incident during a press briefing, expressing, “This is your greatest nightmare – to lose both of your children in that fashion.”

As investigators delved into the circumstances surrounding the tragic event, they reviewed video footage that revealed crucial details. The recordings indicated that the boys were playing near the pond shortly before their deaths. At approximately 5:57pm, they were seen in close proximity to the water, and by 6:02pm, Elijah, who was reported to have autism, had entered the pond. His younger brother Kashh followed moments later.
Security footage also showed the children’s mother searching for them around 6:06pm, as the reality of the situation began to set in. Investigators are currently treating the incident as an “extremely tragic accident,” with no immediate signs of foul play detected.
Elijah Hawkins was a student at Turie T. Small Elementary School, indicating that the family was actively engaged in the community. The local police chief emphasised the need for safety measures, underlining the importance of ensuring that similar accidents do not occur in the future.
In light of the incident, authorities have referred the case to the state attorney’s office for a comprehensive investigation. While the police chief has stated that there are no obvious indications of wrongdoing, the case remains open as details are gathered and examined.
This heartbreaking news has left residents of Daytona Beach in shock, with many expressing their condolences and support for the grieving family. It serves as a tragic reminder of the need for vigilance when it comes to the safety of young children and the potential dangers present in seemingly innocent environments.
As the community mourns the loss of the two young boys, organisations and local leaders are encouraged to discuss, and perhaps implement, more rigorous safety measures to protect children from similar tragedies in the future.
