Former First Lady Michelle Obama has reaffirmed her commitment to empowering girls around the world by announcing significant support for 25 organisations across 15 countries. This initiative, part of her Girls Opportunity Alliance, entails an investment of over $1 million dedicated to fostering education, empowerment, and advocacy for adolescents.

On Sunday, 11 October, coinciding with International Day of the Girl, Obama shared her vision in a video message. She stated, “I’ve always believed that every girl holds a unique promise — a special way that she can change the lives of those around her, maybe even the world.” Her message emphasised the importance of investing in girls as a strategy to build a better future for everyone.

The Girls Opportunity Alliance, launched in 2018 under The Obama Foundation, supports grassroots organisations working tirelessly to ensure girls have access to proper education and resources. Obama elaborated on the Alliance’s mission, saying, “That’s the work the Girls Opportunity Alliance has been committed to for years: lifting up the grassroots leaders and groups that are helping girls around the world get the education they deserve.”
Among the organisations receiving funding are the Associação Mempodera in Brazil, which focuses on promoting gender equity through sports and education, and the Girl Power Foundation in Uganda, a mentoring initiative that supports adolescent girls and young women. The Milaan Foundation in India is another beneficiary, working to empower adolescent girls by enhancing their opportunities and wellbeing.
The funding will enable these organisations to expand their programming significantly. For example, the Girls First Initiative in Tanzania plans to establish leadership clubs in four schools, while the Haiti Adolescent Girls Network intends to train community mentors and create ten spaces for weekly educational sessions. These initiatives demonstrate the potential impact of targeted financial support on communities around the globe.
Leaders from the organisations receiving donations are also invited to join the Girls Opportunity Alliance Network, which facilitates access to valuable resources and engagement opportunities. Since its inception, the Alliance has supported over 265 grassroots projects in 50 countries, indicating a broad commitment to enhancing the lives of girls worldwide.
Michelle Obama has a long history of advocating for women’s rights and education. In 2019, she committed more than $500,000 in proceeds from her bestselling memoir “Becoming” to support girls’ education globally. Earlier this year, the Alliance also allocated $500,000 to ten Chicago-based organisations, demonstrating a concentrated effort to uplift local communities.
In a recent discussion with PEOPLE, she and former President Barack Obama reflected on the achievements of their daughters, Malia and Sasha, noting how they exemplify the promise of their generation. Michelle expressed her admiration for young people today, highlighting that “there are millions of amazing young people like our girls.”
Barack Obama, now 65, shared insights on their philanthropic pursuits, stating, “Over the last 10 years, we have been working with young leaders through the foundation’s programmes around the world. That’s given me the most satisfaction.”
The ongoing commitment of the Obama family to support education and empowerment efforts reinforces the belief that investing in girls can result in transformative changes not only for individuals but also for communities and society at large. With this latest initiative, Michelle Obama continues her legacy of championing causes that uplift and support the next generation of female leaders.
