At least 11 individuals lost their lives and 27 others sustained injuries following a harrowing collision between a tour bus and a truck in the Akhisar district of Manisa, Turkey. The tragic incident occurred on Sunday, 11th October 2026, along the Gebze-Orhangazi-Izmir highway, which runs near the coastal city of Izmir.

Emergency services were quick to respond to the scene shortly after the accident unfolded just after 11 a.m. Local reports indicate that the flatbed truck was carrying large wooden planks and was allegedly travelling on the incorrect side of the road. Photographs from the site depicted the bus overturned on its side, suffering significant damage to its rear, while the truck was also seen flipped over.
The bus had 34 passengers and three crew members on board at the time of the crash. Of the 27 injured individuals, 16 were classified as yellow code, indicating serious but not life-threatening injuries; nine were under green code, signifying minor injuries, and one suffered critical injuries classified under red code. Those who were hurt were swiftly transported to local hospitals for treatment.

Following the incident, both drivers of the bus and the truck were detained by local authorities as part of the ongoing investigation. Reports state that the bus driver was held after he received treatment at a hospital. In a statement shared on X, Turkey’s Interior Minister, Mustafa Ciftci, confirmed that the victims were Turkish citizens, although no information has been released regarding the involvement of any foreign nationals.
In the aftermath of the accident, Manisa’s Governor, Vahdettin Ozkan, visited the site and addressed local media. He emphasised the importance of strict adherence to traffic regulations, stating that the investigation would be overseen by the local prosecutor’s office. “We are experiencing, in a painful way, just how vital it is to strictly adhere to traffic rules,” he noted.
The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), alongside police, military units, and health services, all responded promptly to the site to assist with rescue efforts. Ciftci assured the public that a thorough follow-up would be conducted by all relevant institutions involved.
The scale of this tragedy resonates within the context of a worrying trend of bus accidents in Turkey. Earlier this year, in August, a minibus overturned while en route to an engagement party in the Lice district, resulting in seven fatalities, including two individuals at the scene and five others who died in hospital. This particular incident was attributed to a tire burst that caused the vehicle to roll down an embankment.
As the investigation into the latest crash continues, many are calling for increased scrutiny of road safety standards and driver conduct to prevent such tragic occurrences in the future. With multiple fatal accidents reported this year alone, the need for reform in Turkey’s traffic regulations is becoming increasingly apparent. Observers hope that clear lessons will be learnt from these incidents to enhance safety measures on the roads across the country.
