In a remarkable journey of renovation, Olivia DiBona and her husband, Christos Koci, have transformed their modest starter home in Braintree, Massachusetts into a stunning colonial residence. The couple, who had occupied the original house since 2019, opted to undertake an extensive remodel instead of selling and seeking a larger property.

The couple’s journey began with a vision. Having purchased their first home, a dated single-storey ranch, they had always envisaged expanding it into a more spacious and elegant design. Over a period of six years, they meticulously saved up and prepared for the significant renovation, culminating in a $500,000 overhaul that essentially tripled the home’s initial valuation.

“We always knew we would probably stay in this house,” stated DiBona. “We have a big yard and just love the area and being so close to family.” The original property, purchased when they were just 24, featured two bedrooms, one bathroom, and a finished basement, requiring a range of upgrades to make it livable initially. This included refinishing hardwood floors, updating kitchen appliances, and renovating the bathroom.
However, the couple’s aspirations for a larger living space were realised only when they felt financially ready to embark on the extensive renovation that began in August 2025. DiBona, a salon owner, took on the design responsibilities, while her father, utilising his architectural expertise, translated her ideas into tangible plans. This familial collaboration allowed them to retain control over costs by omitting the need for an external architect.
Choosing a contractor proved invaluable for the couple, as utilizing a trusted family friend meant they received quality workmanship along with a competitive price. They operated within a budget, exceeding it only for upgrades and modifications that arose during the project.
The renovation, projected to take six months, concluded just two weeks later in February 2026, which DiBona described as an “unheard of” timeframe for such an ambitious transformation. Throughout the renovation, they were able to maintain costs by making strategic decisions, such as preserving original exterior elements and reusing materials whenever feasible.
Central to the transformation was the couple’s desire for an expansive kitchen space, vital for entertaining family and friends, particularly given their rich Italian and Greek traditions. “We wanted a big, open space with a huge island for hosting holidays,” DiBona expressed. “That meant we were going to have a lot of cabinets and a lot of countertop square footage, which we prioritised in our budget.”
The couple’s careful planning extended to the overall layout of the home, with a focus on functionality that suited their lifestyle. DiBona noted that incorporating her father’s engineering insights into the design made the project smoother and enhanced their confidence in the outcome.
Despite the thorough planning, the demolition stage instilled moments of doubt for DiBona. Watching the structural dismantling elicited feelings of anxiety and uncertainty about the project’s direction. “I definitely had a few breakdowns during the process,” she admitted. “But I never thought about backing out or selling.”
Additionally, the couple managed their financial input carefully, resorting to a construction loan midway through the renovation as a buffer against unforeseen expenses, while living rent-free with DiBona’s parents during the remodel.
Overall, they have invested approximately £900,000 in the property, which has been appraised at around £1.2 million following renovations. This evaluation signifies a tangible gain of about £300,000 against the original purchase price of £400,000, particularly as they compared it favourably to other homes in the area.
What’s more, the renovation has created not just an aesthetically pleasing space, but ultimately, a home that truly reflects their lifestyle and personal aspirations. DiBona reflected on their achievement with satisfaction, saying, “We feel so much more settled and at ease knowing we are in potentially our forever home.”
With their upgraded residence complete, DiBona and Koci are well-positioned, not just financially but also in terms of family connections, allowing them to lay down roots in a community they cherish. The renovation journey has equipped them with a home that is in sync with their lives, marking this significant milestone with joy and optimism for the future.
