In a significant step towards sustainability, Six Flags Magic Mountain has officially completed its expansive solar carport project. Spanning 637,000 square feet, this venture is now the largest solar carport in California and ranks among the largest single-site commercial solar installations in the United States.

Launched on the first day of National Energy Awareness Month, this landmark development is designed to offset 100% of the park’s annual electricity needs. This ambitious project not only aims to enhance energy efficiency but also contributes to a greener environment, marking a historic achievement for the amusement park located in Valencia, California.
The solar carport installation provides shelter for 4,315 vehicles. This includes 3,544 parking spaces for guests and an additional 771 for park employees. Integral to the project are 109 electric vehicle charging stations, which promote the use of electric cars among visitors and staff, thereby further encouraging sustainable transport options.
Each year, the solar carport is expected to produce around 20.8 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy. To put that into context, this amount of energy is comparable to the annual consumption of approximately 2,874 average households. Such production not only meets the park’s energy requirements but also allows for considerable reductions in the carbon footprint associated with traditional energy sources.
According to park officials, the environmental advantages of this undertaking include the ecological benefit equivalent to removing over 3,182 gasoline-powered cars from the roads or preserving an impressive 17,162 acres of carbon-capturing forested land. These statistics underscore the project’s dedication to combating climate change and promoting environmental stewardship.
Brian Oerding, the president of Six Flags Magic Mountain, expressed enthusiasm regarding the project, dubbing it a “transformative moment” for the park. Oerding mentioned that the solar carport illustrates the commitment of organisations to pursue innovative practices that support robust environmental responsibility.
The solar carport operates in conjunction with the Southern California Edison grid, ensuring a seamless flow of energy. If the solar output exceeds the park’s requirements and the battery storage limit is reached, excess energy will be dispatched back to the grid. Conversely, during periods when solar generation falls short, the park retains the flexibility to draw power from the grid. This interconnected design maximizes energy efficiency while providing reliability.
To celebrate the culmination of the project, a special event was held that brought together community leaders, project partners, and stakeholders. A proclamation and certificate were presented to the park in recognition of its substantial leadership efforts in renewable energy initiatives and sustainability practices. This formal recognition highlights both the park’s contributions to environmentalism and the collaborative spirit of innovation driving such initiatives.
As amusement parks continue to adapt to modern challenges, the completion of the solar carport at Six Flags Magic Mountain serves as an exemplary model for the industry, illustrating how entertainment venues can successfully integrate sustainable practices alongside guest experience enhancement.
