A woman from Milwaukee is facing serious legal repercussions after allegedly impersonating a substitute teacher at her former high school, Rufus King International High School. Amy Jones, 23, is charged with multiple offences following an incident that occurred on September 24, during which she reportedly took on the role of a substitute teacher out of boredom.

Court documents indicate that Jones was charged on October 4 with five counts of exposing a child to harmful descriptions and one count of impersonating a public employee. It has come to light that Jones, who previously studied at Rufus King, scouted the school a week prior to the incident. Reports suggest that she was able to gain access through security by blending in with current students and even overheard discussions regarding a substitute teaching agency during her visit.
On the day of the incident, the school’s principal, Doreen Badillo, confirmed that eight teachers were absent, which led to an available position for a substitute. Jones capitalised on this unfilled role, successfully signing in as a substitute teacher. For a brief period, she remained in the classroom with another teacher before being left alone with the students.

Once in full control of the classroom, Jones allegedly engaged in highly inappropriate behaviour. Reports indicate that she asked students if anyone possessed marijuana or vaping devices and referred to the class as “so f—ing lame and annoying.” Moreover, numerous personal and derogatory comments were reportedly directed at students during her time in class, where she allegedly organised them by race and gender, while using profanities and racial slurs in her remarks.
Witnessing her disrespectful behaviour, the students felt compelled to inform faculty members about the uncomfortable atmosphere she was creating. Following their complaints, Principal Badillo contacted the substitute teaching agency, who quickly confirmed that Jones was not a registered employee.
School authorities acted swiftly, and the police were called to the scene. Upon her removal from the premises, Jones purportedly admitted to the officers that she had assumed the role of a substitute teacher because she was simply “bored.” In a further expression of her feelings, she reportedly stated that she disliked children and was merely seeking to “f— around.”
In response to this alarming incident, Principal Badillo issued a statement reiterating the seriousness of the situation. She confirmed that both the Milwaukee Police Department’s school resource officers and the district’s Title IX coordinator had been notified. Additionally, Badillo indicated that the district is conducting an internal investigation, separate from the police inquiry.
Jones is scheduled to appear in court to address the charges against her, with her next hearing set for October 20. The ramifications of her actions have raised significant concerns regarding school safety and the vetting processes for substitute teachers.
The incident has unsettled students and their families, highlighting the importance of safeguarding educational environments for young individuals. The Milwaukee community now awaits further details as the investigation continues and the court proceedings unfold. Jones’ actions serve as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities in school security and the necessity for vigilance in protecting students from harmful influences.
