On the afternoon of October 6, authorities from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) responded to reports of a drowning at a residential address on Chestnut Ridge Lane. Upon arrival, they discovered the child unconscious in the pool. Fortunately, two bystanders, referred to as good Samaritans, had already entered the water, rescued the child, and commenced CPR, ultimately reviving him.

The terrified child’s three-year-old sister was also found near the pool but, thankfully, was not harmed during the incident. It was reported that the young girl was able to guide police back to their home, which was described as “unsecured and in disarray.”
The two-year-old was swiftly transported to Children’s Hospital, where he remained in a stable condition and was admitted for further monitoring. Initial reports indicated that the child was alert upon reaching the hospital, reflecting the quick actions of the individuals who intervened.
Sheriff Mark Pettway praised the actions of the good Samaritans, noting that their prompt response likely made a significant difference in the outcome. “This could have very well been the difference between life and death,” he stated in a press release.
Hurst is currently being held at Jefferson County Jail with a bond set at $174,000, pending further legal proceedings. The allegations of child neglect and abandonment raise serious concerns about the welfare of the children involved and have sparked discussions around child safety in similar situations.
Local authorities have confirmed that they are conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. As it develops, the case has attracted attention from various quarters, including child welfare advocates, who stress the importance of vigilance when it comes to child safety and supervision, particularly when there are swimming pools involved.
In light of the incident, experts remind the public that drowning remains a leading cause of unintentional injury and death among young children. They urge parents and caregivers to maintain constant supervision in places where water is present, regardless of a child’s swimming ability.
