A Michigan mother, Kadee Martinovich, has gained attention for her creative approach to her daughter Audrey’s first birthday celebration. The party, inspired by the cult classic film *Mean Girls*, was held on October 3rd, now affectionately known as ‘Mean Girls Day’ by fans of the movie.

Audrey Martinovich was born on October 3, a date immortalised in the film when Aaron Samuels asks Cady Heron what day it is. Kadee, who had spent a challenging day in the hospital due to preeclampsia during labour, says that the coincidence of her daughter’s birthday and the film’s significance added an extra layer of meaning to the occasion. “My husband tried to lighten the mood by pointing out it was Mean Girls Day, and it became a fun detail for the birth announcement,” Kadee said.
In planning the first birthday party, Kadee was adamant that the *Mean Girls* theme would be perfect. “The first birthday is primarily about the parents, especially before toddlers start having their own opinions,” she reflects. When putting together the event, she was determined that everything would be pink, in keeping with the movie’s aesthetic.
The menu featured clever references to the film, such as a pasta bar that embraced the quote, “I’m on an all-carb diet.” While initially considering a taco buffet—a nod to another famous line—Kadee opted instead for something more suited to her one-year-old daughter. Other culinary highlights included a salad named after Caesar and apple strudels titled “My father, the inventor of toaster strudel,” which served as a sweet treat following the main course.
The pièce de résistance was the plastic silverware branded as “The Plastics”, a joke that delighted attendees and quickly became a hit on social media.
In addition to the thematic food, Kadee’s mother crafted a milestone board featuring photographs of Audrey, styled to resemble a headboard that might belong to Regina George, the film’s notorious antagonist. To ensure the party encompassed some of Audrey’s personal favourites, Kadee created a custom cake adorned with characters from Disney—Mickey and Minnie, along with Bingo from the animated series Bluey.
Kadee and her husband Brandon are known in their circle for their themed celebrations, something they relish. “Our friends and family expected nothing less than something unique,” Kadee noted, adding that they traditionally send out creatively themed Christmas cards, with their daughter’s inclusion now added to their festive plans. Last year, they even themed their cards around *The Wizard of Oz*.
Guests embraced the theme wholeheartedly, with many appearing in pink outfits or wearing clothing featuring *Mean Girls* quotes. Kadee expressed her joy at how everyone contributed to the spirit of the occasion, reinforcing a sense of community for what she described as a “crazy” celebration.
Although Kadee initially posted a video of the birthday gathering last year to little fanfare, she decided to try her luck again a year later, just before the anniversary of the film’s revered date. The repost quickly went viral, delighting Kadee as a well-deserved recognition of the effort she put into the event. “I felt proud of what we created and hope it inspires other parents who are also fans of the film,” she shared.
Looking ahead, Kadee remains enthusiastic about future birthdays for Audrey, now a lively two-year-old. “I can’t wait to show her the video and photos from her first birthday when she’s older. Who knows, maybe she’ll want to recreate it for her 21st birthday!” she mused, glancing ahead with excitement.
As *Mean Girls Day* continues to be celebrated by fans, Kadee Martinovich’s blend of humour and creativity has ensured that her daughter’s milestone is one the family will cherish for years to come, while potentially laying the groundwork for more iconic celebrations in the future.
